Musk announces Twitter’s tweet reading limits.
(Reuters) -Twitter is taking action to prevent “extreme levels” of data scraping and system manipulation by limiting the number of tweets certain accounts can read per day, according to Executive Chair Elon Musk. In a post on the social media platform on Saturday, Musk revealed that verified accounts were initially restricted to 6,000 posts a day, while unverified accounts were limited to 600 posts a day. New unverified accounts faced an even lower limit of 300 posts a day.
In a separate post, Musk later announced that the temporary reading limitation had been increased to 10,000 posts per day for verified users, 1,000 posts per day for unverified users, and 500 posts per day for new unverified users. However, he did not provide further details on the change.
Previously, Twitter had implemented a requirement for users to have an account on the platform in order to view tweets. Musk referred to this as a “temporary emergency measure” on Friday.
Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with artificial intelligence firms, such as OpenAI, for using Twitter’s data to train their large language models. He claimed that these organizations were aggressively scraping Twitter data, which negatively impacted the user experience.
On Saturday morning, Twitter experienced an outage that affected thousands of users, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. Around 11:17 AM ET, nearly 7,500 users reported issues with accessing the app.
To regain advertisers who had left the platform under Musk’s ownership and boost subscription revenue, Twitter had previously taken several steps, including incorporating verification check marks into the Twitter Blue program.
