Murkowski pledges support for Senate colleague in Trump-Biden rematch.

Senator Lisa‍ Murkowski’s Surprising Statement

In a recent interview, Sen. Lisa ⁢Murkowski ‌ (R-AK) made a bold declaration about the‌ upcoming 2024 presidential election. She revealed that if it turns out to be a rematch of the last election, she would vote for her colleague, Joe Manchin (D-WV), as a‍ third-party candidate.

Murkowski shared her surprising stance during a conversation with ⁣PBS’ Margaret‍ Hoover on “Firing Line.” She expressed her willingness to support Manchin for‌ president if he decides to run independently.

A Potential‌ Game-Changer?

During the interview, Hoover mentioned an outside effort to persuade Joe⁢ Manchin to run ‌as an independent candidate in 2024. She asked Murkowski if such a scenario could potentially spoil Donald Trump’s chances and lead to⁤ his return to the White House.

Murkowski responded, “Yeah, you know, there’s been no end of second-guessing ⁣and people ⁤moving the numbers around. I don’t know on that. Others are smarter than me with elections [and] can weigh in there and they certainly have. Think about it: If we go ⁣into a 2024 scenario where it’s basically a redo of‍ 2020 between Trump and Biden, what does that say? That⁢ we have nobody better than these two?”

She continued, “And so, an Independent ⁢or somebody who is offering something in the middle. People are hungry for that. I can tell you, I’m talking to people up north. They’re⁤ asking because they know that I’m very close ‌with Joe Manchin and‍ I brought him‌ up to this state⁤ a couple of⁣ times and he endorsed me. I’ve ⁢endorsed him.”

Later in‌ the interview, Hoover ‍directly asked‍ Murkowski if she‌ would support Manchin⁣ if he ran⁢ as a third-party candidate. Murkowski confidently replied, “I tell you, if ‍it’s a matchup ⁣between Biden and Trump, I know exactly where I’d go. I would ‍go with Joe Manchin.”

Choosing the Best Candidate

Murkowski emphasized her desire to ⁣be proactive in selecting⁤ a candidate rather than ‌settling for the “lesser of evils.” She expressed her belief‍ that Manchin is capable of doing the job. However, ‍she also questioned whether the current system would allow ‍for such a ⁢choice.
