MTG lashes out at Trump administration, Congress for ‘losing the base’
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) offered a stinging critique of the Trump administration‘s early policies on Friday, asserting that she is a voice for the Republican base and “the base is not happy.”
In a lengthy, winding post to X, the Georgia firebrand criticized a variety of stances the United States has taken since Republicans took control of Washington in January.
She accused the U.S. of inching closer to war with Iran, blasting its minerals deal with Ukraine, the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the COVID-19 vaccine, and a delayed package that would codify some of Trump’s agency-slashing cuts.
“I represent the base and when I’m frustrated and upset over the direction of things, you better be clear, the base is not happy,” Greene wrote.
“When you are losing MTG, you are losing the base. And Trump isn’t on the ballot in the future, so do the math on that,” the congresswoman added.
Greene is a hard-line conservative and avid Trump supporter who defends the president on almost every issue. However, her post appeared to target both the administration and her Trump-aligned colleagues in Congress.
She said she “campaigned for no more foreign wars” and blasted the U.S. for “bombing foreign countries on behalf of other foreign countries especially when they have their own nuclear weapons and massive military strength.”
The Trump administration has supplied additional weapons to Israel in response to the Hamas invasion in 2023 and has stepped up strikes on the Houthi rebels, an Iran-backed militia. Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if the Islamic Republic does not negotiate a new nuclear deal with the U.S. by May. He’s said he is “not in a rush” to bomb Iran but has left the option on the table.
Greene also blasted the recent minerals deal between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The deal establishes a 50/50 partnership between the U.S. and Ukraine via a limited liability company that will evenly split royalties, licensing fees, or other payments from new natural resource projects in Ukraine. The deal encompasses rare earth minerals, oil, gas, and other natural resources.
“Didn’t we learn our lesson when we went to war in Iraq and killed Saddam Hussein because of ‘weapons of mass destruction?’ Did we ever find any? And did any of that oil over in the Middle East make us rich? The answer is no, we are $36 trillion in debt today,” Greene said. “So why on earth would we go over and occupy Ukraine and spend an untold amount of future American taxpayer dollars defending and mining their minerals as well as potentially putting American lives at risk and future war?”
Setting her sights on Congress, she accused her colleagues of not having the “outrage and moral courage” to take stronger measures against the “rogue judicial system.” GOP lawmakers and Trump have accused a handful of judges of being politically motivated after several blocked the president’s executive orders on immigration and other topics.
Greene, the House Department of Government Efficiency subcommittee chairwoman, also said that Republicans have not taken action regarding DOGE or election integrity.
“I believe the DOGE mission is one of the most important things happening today in our government, and yet where are the rescissions that we should be voting on in Congress?” Greene said.
“And what about election integrity? This should be the most important issue that the Republicans aggressively fight to protect because without secure elections protected from illegals voting and protections from stealing our votes, the American people have lost their power,” she added.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS VOTE TO HINDER DEMOCRATS’ ABILITY TO INVESTIGATE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION
Greene has been a vocal opponent of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for much of his speakership. She led the charge to oust him last year, accusing him of being the “Democrats’ speaker.” Johnson ultimately defeated the challenge after a majority of Democrats and Republicans voted to table the motion to vacate him.
The Washington Examiner reached out to Johnson and the White House for comment.
