MTG joins handful of Republicans in favor of extending Obamacare

the article reports that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is breaking ranks with most Republican leadership by supporting a measure to extend Obamacare subsidies by attaching them to a government spending bill.Greene expressed strong frustration that health insurance premiums will double if the tax credits expire, pointing out the impact on her own adult children and constituents. While most Republicans, including President Trump and GOP congressional leaders, insist on passing a “clean” continuing resolution without additional provisions like extending subsidies, Greene joins a small but growing group of Republican lawmakers advocating for immediate action to prevent rising insurance costs. Democrats are pushing to include the subsidy extension in the spending bill to avoid harming millions of Americans’ healthcare coverage. The disagreement led to a government shutdown after Senate Republicans failed to secure enough Democratic support for the stopgap funding measure. Greene criticized GOP leadership for not communicating or offering a plan to address soaring insurance premiums, emphasizing the need to prioritize Americans’ healthcare costs over foreign aid and military spending.

MTG joins handful of Republicans in favor of extending Obamacare subsidies

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) revealed on Monday that she’s bucking Republican leadership in supporting a measure to attach Obamacare subsidies to a government spending bill.

“I’m absolutely disgusted that health insurance premiums will DOUBLE if the tax credits expire this year,” she wrote in a scathing post on X.

“I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year, my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district,” the Georgia Republican continued.

Greene’s statement puts her more in line with Democrats in Congress than most of her own party. However, she joins a small but growing group of lawmakers who are challenging Republican leadership on the issue, signaling cracks are forming in the GOP coalition. Those lawmakers include Reps. Jen Kiggans (R-VA) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) on the House side and Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Susan Collins (R-ME) on the Senate side.

President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) have been adamant that the stopgap spending measure to keep the government open should be a “clean” continuing resolution, or CR. That means it is a simple bill designed to keep the government funded at current levels until Congress comes together later this fall to pass annual appropriations bills funding priorities such as healthcare, education, and the military.

Democrats have blocked passage of the CR, pushing to attach a provision extending Obamacare tax credits and arguing that failure to do so would result in weakened healthcare for millions of people.

Republicans believe the debate over the extensions should take place after the CR is passed and the government is opened. GOP leadership has suggested that such healthcare priorities are traditionally discussed within the context of the annual appropriations process, contending they are willing to consider talks to extend the tax credits at that time.

The stalemate triggered a government shutdown last week after Thune failed to acquire enough Democratic support to push the House-passed CR across the finish line in the upper chamber.

Greene, traditionally considered a loyal though maverick Trump ally, expressed frustration on Monday evening over Republicans’ refusal to get on board with Democrats’ timeline for renewing the subsidies.

FBI’S INVESTIGATION TARGETED TURNING POINT USA, GRASSLEY SAYS

“Not a single Republican in leadership talked to us about this or has given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING!!!” she said.

“WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE ABSOLUTELY INSANE COST OF INSURANCE FOR AMERICANS,” Greene added. “All our country does is fund foreign countries and foreign wars, and never does anything to help the American people!!!”
