Calpers and Genworth among millions affected by MOVEit hack.
(Reuters) – The MOVEit hack continues to grow, impacting millions of individuals. In the latest development, Calpers, the largest U.S. pension fund, and insurer Genworth Financial have revealed that personal information of their members and customers has been compromised.
Both organizations attribute the data theft hack to a third-party vendor, PBI Research Services, which was affected by a security breach. This breach provided an entry point for the hackers to access and steal data from Calpers and Genworth. PBI Research Services has not yet commented on the incident.
Calpers was informed by PBI on June 6, 2023, about a vulnerability in their MOVEit Transfer software that allowed hackers to download “our data.” The exact number of affected individuals has not been specified, but news reports suggest that information from over 700,000 Calpers members and retirees was taken.
The MOVEit software is widely used by organizations worldwide to securely share sensitive data.
Genworth Financial, on the other hand, suffered a more significant impact, with personal information of nearly 2.5 million to 2.7 million customers being breached.
“The personal information of a significant number of insurance policyholders or other customers of its life insurance businesses was unlawfully accessed,” stated Genworth.
Since the discovery of a security flaw in Progress Software’s MOVEit Transfer product last month, various victims have emerged, ranging from U.S. government departments to the UK’s telecom regulator and energy giant Shell.
Genworth has assured that it is working to provide “protection services” to the affected individuals, as mentioned in a regulatory filing.
The data stolen from Calpers includes members’ first and last names, date of birth, and social security numbers. Calpers serves over 2 million members in its retirement system.
The widespread impact of the MOVEit hack highlights the challenges faced by even the most security-minded federal agencies in defending against ransomware attacks. Ransomware gangs often target widely-used tools like MOVEit.
