Mother settles lawsuit over daughter’s 2017 hotel freezer death.
CHICAGO—A tragic incident that occurred in 2017 at a suburban hotel in Chicago has finally reached a settlement. The mother of Kenneka Jenkins, a 19-year-old woman who was found dead in a freezer after attending a party, has resolved her lawsuit against the hotel and other parties involved.
The settlement was reached in August, but the terms have been kept confidential at the request of Jenkins’ mother. However, a judge has denied the request to seal the terms from the public, and a status hearing is scheduled for next week. The case was originally set for trial in October.
The attorneys representing Jenkins’ mother argued that the safety and privacy of the family should take precedence over making the settlement terms public. However, the judge disagreed and requested the attorney to resubmit the request. A status hearing is scheduled for next week.
The lawsuit, filed in December 2018, accused the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosemont, its security company, and a restaurant of negligence. It claimed that they failed to secure the freezer and conduct a proper search after Jenkins went missing. Initially seeking over $50 million in damages, the lawsuit alleged that the defendants were responsible for Jenkins’ tragic death.
Jenkins’ lifeless body was discovered in the freezer on September 10, 2017, almost a day after she disappeared from a ninth-floor room at the Crowne Plaza, where she had attended a party with around 30 other people.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined that Jenkins died from hypothermia and ruled her death as an accident. The office also stated that alcohol intoxication and the use of a drug for epilepsy and migraines were contributing factors.
Surveillance videos released by the police shortly after her disappearance showed Jenkins wandering alone near the freezer in a kitchen area.
