The mother of the gunman who carried out a shooting at Michigan’s Oxford High School in 2021 is blaming her husband for helping their son obtain a gun.
According to a court filing on Monday, prosecutors allege that Jennifer Crumbley has been telling other inmates that her husband, James Crumbley, is to blame for purchasing the gun that their son used to kill four students and injure seven others and he ignored their son’s mental health issues.
Prosecutors argue that Ethan Crumbley had complained to his father about needing to see a doctor over his mental health.
17-year-old Crumbley, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to 24 counts in October 2022, nearly a year after he killed students Madisyn Baldwin, Tate Myre, Hana St. Juliana, and Justin Shilling.
In late September, a judge also ruled that the Michigan teenager is eligible to be sentenced to life without parole.
Given Crumbley’s age, juveniles cannot be sentenced to life without parole in the state without prosecutors proving to the judge that it’s the appropriate sentence.
James and Jennifer Crumbley have each been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter.
It’s rare for parents to be charged in school shootings. After the shooting, James and Jennifer withdrew thousands of dollars from an ATM before shutting their phones off, ensuing a frantic manhunt. After hours of searching the pair were found hiding in a commercial building in Detroit.
In a 2022 court filing prosecutors said “Put simply, they created an environment in which their son’s violent tendencies flourished. They were aware their son was troubled, and then they bought him a gun.”
Records show the elder Crumbley’s are due to appear in court in January 2024.

What are the charges against James and Jennifer Crumbley in relation to the Oxford High School shooting?
Tuned for further updates on this ongoing case.
School shootings continue to be a devastating issue that plagues our society, causing immense pain and grief. The tragedy that unfolded at Oxford High School in Michigan in 2021 serves as a harsh reminder of the urgent need for stricter gun control measures and increased mental health support.
In this particular case, the mother of the shooter, Jennifer Crumbley, is now pointing the finger at her husband, James Crumbley, for facilitating their son’s access to a firearm. Prosecutors claim that Jennifer has been vocalizing her belief that James is responsible for purchasing the gun used in the shooting, while also allegedly disregarding their son’s mental health issues.
According to court documents filed on Monday, it has been revealed that Ethan Crumbley had confided in his father about his struggles with mental health and the need to seek professional help. These details add a layer of complexity to the case, as it raises questions about whether proper intervention could have prevented the tragic events that transpired.
Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, pleaded guilty to 24 counts related to the incident in October 2022. The tragedy claimed the lives of four students and left seven others injured. In a significant development, a judge recently ruled that Ethan is eligible to be sentenced to life without parole, despite his age. However, this decision depends on prosecutors proving to the judge that such a sentence is appropriate.
Meanwhile, James and Jennifer Crumbley have each been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. It is a rarity to see parents facing charges in school shootings, but the circumstances surrounding this case have led authorities to hold them accountable. After the shooting occurred, the Crumbleys withdrew a large sum of money from an ATM and turned off their phones, prompting a frantic manhunt. They were eventually located hiding in a commercial building in Detroit.
“Put simply, they created an environment in which their son’s violent tendencies flourished. They were aware their son was troubled, and then they bought him a gun,” prosecutors stated in a 2022 court filing.
The legal proceedings for James and Jennifer Crumbley are scheduled to take place in January 2024, and it is essential to follow this case closely for any further developments.
The tragedy at Oxford High School serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise when we fail to address the underlying issues surrounding gun violence and mental health. It is crucial that we work towards comprehensive solutions that prioritize the safety and well-being of our communities, especially our children. Only through collective efforts and a commitment to change can we hope to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
