Miyares: If Jones Was Sorry For Violent Texts, He Would Drop Out

The article reports on Virginia Attorney General candidate Jason Miyares,a Republican, who criticized his democratic opponent Jay Jones during a debate. Miyares accused Jones of not being truly sorry for having previously expressed violent fantasies about murdering Republicans, pointing to Jones’s controversial 2022 remarks that included hoping harm to a fellow legislator’s children. Miyares emphasized the pain such statements cause to grieving families and questioned Jones’s sincerity since he continues to run for office despite the backlash. Despite these accusations, Jones has received strong support from Democratic leaders and committees, who have not called for him to withdraw, with some even organizing fundraisers in his favor. Republican Jason Miyares said Thursday during the Virginia attorney general debate that his Democrat opponent Jay Jones would drop out of the race if he was truly sorry for calling for the murder of Republicans.

Miyares and Jones went head-to-head Thursday night as both vie for the state’s highest law enforcement position. Miyares called Jones out for fantasizing about murdering Republicans.

“[Jay Jones] keeps saying that he is sorry. Jay, if you’re really sorry, you wouldn’t be running — if you really understood the ramifications of what you said about an innocent mom and her children. You know Todd Gilbert; you’ve served with him. Jennifer would come to the General Assembly; she would bring her children. We would see them run in the hallways. They were two and five years old at the time. This wasn’t a hypothetical; this wasn’t some figure that you know from far away — you actually know Todd. This is a flesh-and-blood real husband. Jennifer is a real mom. These are real kids,” Miyares said.

“How in the world could you ever show compassion and comfort a grieving mother that has ever lost a child to violence? Because Virginians, there is no cry like the cry of a mother that has lost her child. A prosecutor knows this because they’ve stood in that courtroom. Jay Jones has never understood this because he’s not a prosecutor. He’s a politician trying to save his career.”

During a 2022 exchange with Republican Delegate Carrie Coyner, Jones said it would be a “good thing” if his former legislative colleague’s children died.

“Three people, two bullets. [Republican House Speaker Todd] Gilbert, [H]itler, and [P]ol [P]ot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head. Spoiler: put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time,” Jones said in a message. When Coyner pushed back about Jones “[hoping] [J]ennifer Gilbert’s children would die,” Jones confirmed that “Yes,” he was.

“Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy,” Jones continued. Jones also called the Gilberts’ young children “little fascists.”

Despite the egregious comments, Jones has no reason to drop out when his party has only doubled down on its support of him. Democrat candidate Abigail Spanberger refused five times to withdraw her endorsement of Jones during a recent gubernatorial debate.

Lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Ghazala Hashmi said that “political violence has no place in our country and I condemn it at every turn” and that Jones “must take accountability,” but has not called for Jones to withdraw from the race.

The Virginia Beach Democrats put out a statement that “reaffirms its full support of Jay Jones” despite “past mistakes.” The Democratic Committees of Virginia’s Second Congressional District also doubled down on their “full support of Jay Jones.”

A letter signed by the Accomack County Democratic Committee, Chesapeake Democratic Committee, Franklin Democratic Committee, Isle of Wight County Democratic Committee, Northampton County Democratic Committee, Southampton County Democratic Committee, Suffolk Democratic Committee, and Virginia Beach Democratic Committee says: “We say, let those without sin cast the first stone.”

Meanwhile the Stafford Democratic Committee is scheduled to hold a fundraiser featuring Jones on Friday.
