‘Mission: Impossible’ Director Shares Strangest Tom Cruise Tale
Tom Cruise: The Enigmatic Hollywood A-lister
“Mission: Impossible” director Christopher McQuarrie recently shared an intriguing story about Tom Cruise, calling it the “weirdest story” he had ever heard.
McQuarrie and the rest of the cast of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” sat down with the Times of London to discuss their experience working with the legendary actor, as reported by Variety. During the conversation, Cruise addressed a rumor that co-stars were not allowed to make eye contact with him, a claim that McQuarrie debunked.
Simon Pegg, who has appeared in multiple “Mission: Impossible” films, also chimed in, describing Cruise as a fun and outgoing individual. Pegg revealed that during breaks from filming “Dead Reckoning Part One,” the 61-year-old action star took the cast go-karting and zip-lining, adding an element of adventure to their time together.
“I’ve managed to unravel all the peculiar myths that surround him,” Pegg continued. “On one hand, he’s Tom Cruise — the enigmatic film star everyone is curious about. On the other hand, he’s just a regular guy. I enjoy treating him like any other person.”
Pegg previously revealed that he avoids discussing Scientology with Cruise, as he believes it would be an abuse of his privileged access to the actor. However, Pegg does playfully tease Cruise about his fame.
“We joke about it,” Pegg shared. “I mean, I always make fun of him for it, you know, about the things that he can do. We were recently filming on a mountain in South Africa when he suddenly decided he wanted to swim with sharks. He flew us in a helicopter to a seaside location, and we ended up diving with sharks. At the end of the day, we said, ‘That was a true Tom Cruise kind of day.’ He appreciates the absurdity of it all sometimes.”
“My relationship with him is simple and friendly. It has always been effortless,” Pegg added.
“When you meet the person behind the veil of mythology, it’s a different experience. He thrives on the fame and it fuels his drive. Personally, I don’t think I would handle it well. It would be overwhelming and make me want to retreat. I’m content where I am.”
“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” hits theaters on July 12.
