Minneapolis Mayor Blames ICE For Ramming Attack On Officers

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey accused federal immigration agents of causing chaos and called for ICE to leave the city after a woman was fatally shot during an incident in which she reportedly attempted to ram an officer. The Department of Homeland Security said ICE officers were conducting targeted operations when rioters blocked them and one person weaponized her vehicle, prompting an ICE officer to fire defensive shots. Video posted online appears to show officers ordering the woman from the car and the vehicle accelerating into an agent.Frey condemned the governance’s characterization of the shooting as self-defence and used profane language to demand ICE’s departure. The article places Frey’s remarks in a broader context of Democratic and left-leaning rhetoric that has compared ICE to the Gestapo and highlights earlier media errors and disputed accounts that critics say have inflamed public opinion about immigration enforcement. The piece is by Brianna Lyman for The Federalist.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey decided to blame federal law enforcement agents on Wednesday for the fatal shooting of a woman who apparently attempted to ram her vehicle into an officer.

According to Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, “ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking  ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them — an act of domestic terrorism.”

An ICE officer “fearing for his life … fired defensive shots.”

As The Federalist reported, video footage of the incident posted on X appears to show officers instructing the woman to exit her vehicle. The woman accelerated and appeared to make contact with an agent who was positioned in front of her vehicle.

Frey, however, accused the Trump administration of “trying to spin this as an action of self-defense,” calling the characterization “bullsh-t.”

“I have a message for ICE: To ICE, get the f-ck out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here,” Frey said. Frey also asserted that ICE is “not here to cause safety in this city. What they are doing is not to provide safety in America. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust; they’re ripping families apart, and they’re sowing chaos on our streets, and in this case, quite literally killing people.”

It’s the same type of incendiary rhetoric other Democrats and leftists have used in recent months to malign federal law enforcement officers.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries previously likened ICE agents to the Gestapo: “Every single ICE agent who’s engaged in this aggressive overreach, no matter what it takes, no matter how long it takes, will, of course, be identified. This is not the 1930s.”

New York Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman also once compared ICE to the Gestapo, calling them “secret police, who are masked, who are intimidating, who are scaring people … with these Gestapo-like tactics.”

Democrat Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said, “Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo is scooping folks up off the streets.”

Washington Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal asserted that “ICE agents, they are coming and kidnapping and disappearing people on the streets of the United States.”

Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Stephen Lynch stated, “When you compare the old films of the Gestapo grabbing people off the streets of Poland, it does look like a Gestapo operation.”

Further, the left has run several hoaxes accusing ICE agents of illegal and immoral behavior.

As The Federalist reported in September, NBC News asserted that ICE used a young girl as a hostage just a day before a shooter attacked an ICE vehicle in Dallas. Democrat politicians weaponized the story against ICE, labeling ICE “vile and beyond cruel.” But NBC News had to update its story after it became clear that the outlet “mischaracterized the activities of ICE agents in the video.” As it turns out, the criminal father had run away from ICE agents, leaving his autistic daughter standing with federal law enforcement.

In November The New Yorker wrote a piece empathizing with Orville Etoria, an illegal alien deported to Eswatini. The Jamaican national, who has been living in the United States for nearly 50 years, had multiple serious felonies, including armed robbery and murder. But The New Yorker glossed over these facts.
