Mindy Kaling Tells Parents To Pay For College Daughters To Freeze Eggs, Promotes Single Motherhood

Writer, actress, and creator Mindy Kaling promoted single motherhood in an interview released this month, adding her hope that parents pay for their college daughters to freeze their eggs.

Kaling, reportedly worth $35 million, had her eggs frozen and became a single mother in her late thirties. She’s currently single with two children.

“I waited until I had the means and that made all the difference,” she told Marie Claire magazine. “The choice to have a child—by yourself, on your own terms — it was the best part of my life.”

Kaling reportedly alluded to her privilege and the overturning of the abortion case Roe v. Wade before promoting single motherhood for others.

“The choice to have a child—by yourself, on your own terms—it was the best part of my life … It’s the thing that I hope women feel confident doing by themselves,” she said.

“I wish every 19-year-old girl would come home from college and that the gift —instead of buying them jewelry or a vacation or whatever — is that their parents would take them to freeze their eggs,” the “Mindy Project” creator said.

“They could do that once and have all these eggs for them, for their futures … to focus in your twenties and thirties on your career, and yes, love, but to know that when you’re emotionally ready, and, if you don’t have a partner, you can still have children,” the actress continued.

Kaling has never revealed the biological father of her children or if he’s in her children’s lives at all. However, rumors have sparked that fellow “Office” writer and close friend B.J. Novak is the dad. Novak and Kaling briefly dated during their “Office” years.

“He’s the godparent to both my kids—and they have such a great relationship—and so far [the rumors haven’t] affected my happiness at all, it hasn’t affected my kids or BJ,” she reacted. “If that’s what is going to be titillating to people, I’ll take it.”

Kaling said she plans on creating a show featuring a single woman in her forties pursuing romance — and thinks she’s the only person to do it.

“Culture largely says, ‘We don’t wanna hear about you. Your entire deal bums everyone out.’ If you’re a 42-year-old [single] woman with kids, it makes people sad,” she told the magazine. “I’m like, ‘There is hope for us. There could be great stories about women, like me, finding love, finding happiness…’ I can’t imagine anyone besides me would write it, so I have to find the time to do that.”

Back in 2018, Kaling notably gave men some shocking dating advice while delivering the commencement address at Dartmouth College, her alma mater.

“This one is just for guys: When you go on dates, act as if every woman you’re talking to is a reporter for an online publication that you are scared of,” she told the grads. “One shouldn’t need the threat of public exposure and scorn to treat women well; but if that’s what it’s gonna take, fine. Date like everyone’s watching, because we are.”

The commentary showcased Kaling’s adversarial view of the sexes, suggesting men should be terrified to pursue women. And if a man falters or says something interpreted in a way a woman does not like, their words can and should be used against them.
