The Milwaukee Police Department’s Decision to Protect Crime Victims’ Privacy
The Milwaukee Police Department has made an important decision to prioritize the dignity and privacy of crime victims. In a move influenced by discussions with LGBT activists, the department will no longer report the gender of victims in media releases.
Heather Hough, the police department’s chief of staff, explained, “It’s a way to preserve the dignity and privacy of all victims.” The department aims to provide the best service possible for the entire community.
Advocating for Transgender Victims
One of the driving forces behind this policy change was the concern that police reports about transgender murder victims often failed to respect their gender identity. These reports would refer to their biological sex and use their birth names, causing distress and erasing their true identities.
Justin Roby, director of finance and human resources for Diverse and Resilient, an LGBT nonprofit that collaborated with the department on this policy, commended the decision. Roby emphasized that there is no need to disclose a victim’s gender to the public.
Addressing Concerns and Raising Awareness
Some critics worry that this policy may hinder efforts to bring attention to the homicides of transgender individuals. However, Roby dismissed these concerns, stating that the issue is already widely known and many police department databases do not report a victim’s transgender status.
It is important to note that activists across the country have alleged a “trans genocide” in progress in the United States. However, this claim has been disputed by many.
Broader Implications
This decision by the Milwaukee Police Department reflects a larger trend in concealing transgender identities. Several Democratic administrations, such as New Jersey governor Phil Murphy and the head of California’s Department of Education, have embraced policies to keep parents unaware of their children’s gender identity.
