Iconic heavyweight champion Mike Tyson admitted on Tuesday that he is somewhat afraid of his fight with boxer Jake Paul, which is scheduled for July 20.
The match will be his first since November 2020, when Tyson fought Roy Jones Jr., which ended in a draw after eight rounds. Tyson, 57, explained he has a “weird” personality, in which whatever he is afraid to do, he seeks to accomplish, hence the fight with Paul.
“I was afraid for the Roy fight, I was scared of fighting, I was a hundred pounds overweight, I was however old, 54, 53, and I said, ‘Let’s do it,’” Tyson said on Fox News’s Hannity. “Anything I’m afraid of, I confront it, and that’s my personality. Like right now, I’m scared to death, but as the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become because it’s reality, and in reality, I’m invincible.”
Tyson reflected on this feeling he had felt throughout his career, arguing that adversity and nervousness had driven him to success. He added that these types of feelings are needed for him to fight, as without them, he would not go into the fighting ring.
Paul, 27, made a name for himself in the 2010s for his content creation on video platforms Vine and YouTube and started boxing in 2018. Since then, he has won nine out of 10 matches, with Tyson noting that Paul has “grown significantly as a boxer over the years.”

Jones gave his take on the matchup, warning that Paul would need to avoid getting hit “square on the chin” by Tyson. Jones also predicted that Paul could stand a chance against Tyson should he “stay away” from the heavyweight champion for the first four or five rounds but said that doing so would require “a lot of maneuvering.”
Netflix will livestream the boxing event on July 20, with the fight taking place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It will mark the streaming platform’s first major live boxing event.
