House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.6 trillion spending reduction plan, describing it as a significant initial step towards fiscal responsibility. Johnson referred to the bill as “the one big, lovely bill,” emphasizing its potential to deliver historic tax savings for Americans and notable cuts to government spending. He encouraged senators to be cautious regarding any modifications to the bill, which he deemed remarkable, even though it may not encompass all their preferences.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) reiterated his support for President Donald Trump‘s “one big, beautiful bill” to pass in the Senate, saying it would provide “the most money that any legislative body has ever saved.”
Following the House‘s passage of the bill in May, Johnson encouraged senators to “be careful” of any disagreements they have on the bill in its current form, calling the legislation “extraordinary” despite not including “all of our preferences.”
“We call it the one big, beautiful bill for a reason,” Johnson explained on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “We are not only going to have historic tax savings for hardworking Americans, but historic tax cuts and savings to the public fisc as well. We’re going to save $1.6 trillion, which is the most money that any legislative body has ever saved in the history of mankind, so it’s a good first start.”
Johnson was also asked about the House’s vote on the first round of reductions from the Department of Government Efficiency, which would codify $9.4 billion in spending cuts. The speaker largely brushed off the resistance the spending cut legislation will likely receive from Republicans and Democrats and said “every Republican” in the House and Senate wants to reduce spending.
Republicans only control the House by a small majority, which could be lost if the Democratic Party gains seats in the 2026 midterm elections. Johnson said he is “convinced” that Democrats will seek to impeach Trump as soon as they become the majority party, something the party already did twice in the president’s first term.
Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” has received scrutiny from several Senate Republicans, who control the Senate by just three votes. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has expressed caution, saying he wants to support it but opposes raising the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

Trump invited Paul to the annual White House picnic after the senator said he was disinvited. Trump suggested that the picnic would be an opportunity for him to convince Paul to support the legislation. Paul described Trump’s statement as a “promising sign of things to come.”
Meanwhile, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) has expressed enthusiasm for passing the bill, saying on Fox Business’s Kudlow that he is “very optimistic” the Senate can finish its work by July 4. However, while he said he wants to ensure that Trump’s agenda is passed, Scott stressed the need to balance the budget and urged for more savings to be included in the bill to help make this possible.
