Mike Huckabee criticizes Biden’s remarks on his late wife’s passing in Hawaii.
Former Presidential Candidate Criticizes Biden’s Comments on Hawaii Visit
Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has voiced his criticism of President Joe Biden’s remarks during his visit to Hawaii, accusing Biden of focusing on himself rather than the tragedy at hand.
During his visit to survey the damage caused by the Maui wildfires, Biden shared personal stories of past fires that affected him. Huckabee, a Republican, likened Biden to a Saturday Night Live character named Penelope, who always found a way to make her situation seem more significant.
“It’s like Joe Biden is playing the role of Penelope,” Huckabee remarked during an appearance on Fox News’s Hannity. “Well, it’s funny. It’s comedy. But it’s not funny when the president of the United States is so tone-deaf to the extraordinary tragedy these people have felt and he talks about himself rather than talk about them.”
Huckabee acknowledged the loss Biden experienced with the death of his first wife but argued that it was not what the people of Maui needed to hear at that moment.
The fire Biden mentioned during his visit occurred in 2004 when lightning struck near his Delaware home. However, according to the Cranston Heights Fire Company, the fire was quickly contained and did not require a widespread incident response.
During his visit, Biden pledged federal aid to assist in the rebuilding of Maui. This promise followed the announcement that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had authorized critical needs assistance, providing a one-time payment of $700 per household to applicants.
Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii expressed her concerns about the lack of trust in government leaders following the wildfires. She also criticized the $700 payment to Maui residents, considering it to be insufficient for those who have lost everything.
“Anybody who has been to Hawaii knows that $700 does not go very far at a time when so many have lost everything,” Gabbard stated.
As the search-and-rescue efforts continue in the affected communities, officials in Maui reported that 850 people are still missing. The confirmed death toll stands at 114, but this number may rise as the efforts continue.
