New horror film featuring Mickey Mouse announced as ‘Steamboat Willie’ enters public domain
A Terrifying Twist: Mickey Mouse to Star in New Horror Film
Hold onto your seats, because a bone-chilling horror movie featuring the iconic “Steamboat Willie” version of Mickey Mouse is currently in the works, according to a thrilling report by Variety.
A New Chapter for Mickey Mouse
Disney’s copyright to the beloved “Steamboat Willie” expired on Monday, along with its rights to the original versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. However, fear not, as the company still holds copyrights for the more modern renditions of these iconic characters. “Steamboat Willie” is an animated short from 1928 that is widely considered the debut of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. But be warned, this early Mickey is quite different from the familiar cartoon we know today. According to NPR, he’s described as “more rascally and rough.”
Seizing this thrilling opportunity, independent filmmaker Steven LaMorte has announced his plans to bring Mickey Mouse into the realm of horror.
A Twisted Take on a Beloved Character
“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies the potential for pure, unhinged terror,” LaMorte declared in a press release. “This is a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on the beloved character to the world.”
LaMorte, who previously directed the horror film “The Mean One” (2022) featuring the infamous Dr. Seuss character The Grinch, is no stranger to dark and eerie storytelling. With his latest endeavor, he aims to honor these cherished characters while presenting them in an entirely new light.
“We are doing our due diligence to ensure there’s no question or confusion about our intentions,” LaMorte assured. “This is our interpretation of a public domain character. It’s a thrilling rollercoaster ride with heart and humor, based on this character that everybody knows.” The film’s producers are even working closely with a legal team to ensure compliance with copyright laws.

Disney has made it clear that they will remain vigilant in protecting the copyright-protected version of Mickey Mouse.
“We will, of course, continue to safeguard our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other copyrighted works. We will also take measures to prevent any confusion caused by unauthorized use of Mickey and our other iconic characters,” the company stated.
This development echoes what happened when Winnie the Pooh and Piglet entered the public domain last year. The horror film “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” shocked audiences with its portrayal of Pooh and Piglet as deranged serial killers. Now, with Tigger also joining the public domain on January 1, 2024, who knows what terrifying tales await us?
