Merrick Garland Pushes Back On Claims Hunter Biden Prosecutor Was Blocked From Bringing Charges
Attorney General Merrick Garland Addresses Claims Regarding Hunter Biden Investigation
In a press conference on Friday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland responded to allegations that U.S. Attorney David Weiss, a Trump nominee, was prevented from bringing charges against Hunter Biden and denied the designation of a special counsel in the case.
Garland’s remarks come in light of recent testimony from IRS whistleblowers, who claimed that Weiss was blocked from pursuing charges against Hunter Biden in multiple jurisdictions last year.
Addressing the media, Garland firmly stated, “Weiss had full authority to continue his investigation and make independent decisions on prosecution, regardless of the district.”
He further emphasized, “Mr. Weiss himself confirmed this authority in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee. It is unfathomable that anyone could have impeded his ability to bring charges.”
When pressed on whether Weiss had ever been told “no,” Garland responded, “I can confidently say that he was given complete autonomy to make all decisions.”
Later, Garland was questioned about allegations that Weiss had requested to be named a special counsel for added power and protection, but was denied by the Justice Department.
Garland clarified, “As the Attorney General, I am the sole authority to appoint or reject a special counsel. However, Mr. Weiss never made such a request to me.”
He continued, “In fact, Mr. Weiss possessed even greater authority than a special counsel would have. He had and still has complete discretion to bring the case wherever he sees fit.”
Regarding the IRS whistleblowers, Garland expressed his support for Weiss to address their allegations publicly “at the appropriate time.”
Garland Defends the Integrity of the Justice Department
During the press conference, Garland was also asked about Republicans considering holding the FBI Director in contempt over a document allegedly containing information about a criminal bribery scheme involving then-Vice President Joe Biden.
Responding firmly, Garland stated, “Attacking the integrity of the Justice Department and its employees by claiming unequal treatment of cases is an assault on an institution vital to American democracy and the safety of its people.”
He emphasized, “Let me be clear, we base our cases solely on the facts and the law. These are not empty words. They are the principles that guide our decision-making process.”
