Megyn Kelly questions McConnell’s wife’s absence: Not fit for Senate role.
Megyn Kelly Questions Sen. McConnell’s Fitness for Office
Megyn Kelly, host of SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show, raised concerns about the well-being of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) after his recent public freeze-ups. In a thought-provoking episode, Kelly also pondered the absence of spouses in questioning the continued service of aging politicians like McConnell, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and President Joe Biden.
Examining McConnell’s Condition
Kelly expressed her worry about the declining state of the seven-term senator. During the show, she emphasized the importance of subjecting McConnell to the same scrutiny that Democratic senators have faced.
“So I take no pleasure in any of this, but the fact is, he doesn’t seem well enough to be a sitting U.S. Senator anymore. He just doesn’t,” Kelly said. ”If we’re gonna call out the John Fettermans and the Dianne Feinsteins of the world, we’re derelict if we don’t do it to the Mitch McConnells of the world. He’s not being open about what’s happening to him.”
McConnell’s work schedule was cleared by Congress’s attending physician, who attributed his recent health issues to a concussion and possible dehydration. However, talk show host Glenn Greenwald argued that McConnell’s condition is a matter of public concern due to his significant power and responsibility.
Retirement and the Role of Spouses
Kelly expressed her belief that it should not be solely up to the public to remove elderly politicians from office when they are no longer capable. Instead, she suggested that spouses should play a role in gently encouraging retirement.
“And I do wonder, I think it’s a fair question. Where is Jill Biden? Where’s Elaine Chao? Where’s Dianne Feinstein’s partner?” Kelly questioned. “Because I know God forbid this ever happened to me, my husband would say: ‘Honey, you’re the bomb. But it’s going to be super fun for us to travel the Grand Canyon and the great parks of the United States together at this point in your career. This is what we’re going to do. It’s going to be the fun next phase of life for us. And maybe it’s time to step away from the lectern in the U.S. Senate or the microphone’ — in the case of somebody like me. Where are they?”
As of now, it remains uncertain whether McConnell will seek an eighth term in office.
