Megan Rapinoe asserts significant gender bias in the US.
Retired Athlete Megan Rapinoe Highlights Backlash Against Women in the United States
Renowned athlete and activist Megan Rapinoe recently spoke out about the significant backlash faced by women in the United States. Drawing from her own experiences and those of her former teammates, Rapinoe shed light on the criticism they have endured over the years.
Rapinoe, who played for the U.S. women’s soccer team, recalled their elimination from the FIFA World Cup earlier this year. It was during a game against Sweden when Rapinoe missed a penalty kick, leading to their defeat. She expressed that this setback seemed to be eagerly anticipated by conservatives, stating that “everybody on the right” had been waiting for her team to stumble.
Addressing the Backlash
“One thing that America does really well is backlash,” Rapinoe emphasized. She pointed out the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the ongoing debate surrounding transgender athletes in sports as examples of the backlash against women in society.
Rapinoe also responded to criticism from former President Donald Trump, who claimed that the team’s loss reflected the state of the nation and accused the players of being openly hostile to America. Dismissing Trump’s statements as a collection of “hit words and hot-button words,” Rapinoe asserted that they lacked coherence.
“I think, just in general, the way that our team was spoken about over the course of the tournament, it was fake,” Rapinoe stated, highlighting the unfair portrayal of her team.
Standing Strong
In July, the U.S. women’s soccer team faced criticism for their behavior during the national anthem before the World Cup’s first game. Several players stood stone-faced without placing their hands over their hearts. Rapinoe, in addition, expressed her support for transgender athletes, stating that she would welcome them onto the U.S. women’s national team.
Following the World Cup loss, Rapinoe released a statement expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to represent the U.S. She recently announced her retirement from soccer, marking the end of her illustrious career that included four World Cup appearances.
In her retirement statement, Rapinoe expressed pride in her team and their accomplishments, describing them as “so very special.” She reassured fans that the team would continue to be in capable hands, just as it always has been and always will be.
