Media resistance to Trump crime cleanup is ‘reflexive’: Sarah Bedford
The article discusses the resistance from media and some Democrats to President donald TrumpS deployment of the National Guard to address rising crime in Washington, D.C. Sarah Bedford, investigations editor for the Washington Examiner, describes this opposition as “reflexive,” attributing it to a general hostility toward anything Trump does. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that nearly 70 people were arrested overnight in D.C., with over 300 arrests as Trump declared a “crime emergency” in the district.
Bedford highlights that many journalists live in safer neighborhoods and are less exposed to the severe crime problems facing certain areas-specifically Ward 7 and Ward 8, where crime rates are extremely high, with ward 8 reportedly having a murder rate worse than Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and more hazardous even than South Africa. She praises Trump’s action as politically savvy, forcing Democrats to defend a broken status quo.
Additionally, Fox News contributor Richard Fowler, a Ward 8 resident, observed a lack of National Guard presence and questioned the effectiveness of local leadership. Governors from South Carolina and Ohio announced deployments of their National Guard members to D.C. to support the effort. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough also criticized Democrats’ opposition, acknowledging the longstanding crime issues in the district. the piece frames Trump’s crime crackdown as a necessary and popular response amid political pushback.
Media resistance to Trump crime cleanup is ‘reflexive’: Sarah Bedford
Washington Examiner investigations editor Sarah Bedford said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s National Guard deployment is facing opposition because some are against “anything Trump tries to do.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Sunday that 68 people were arrested in the District of Columbia the night before, putting the number of arrests since Trump declared a “crime emergency” in the district over 300.
While some Democrats are pushing back against Trump’s action to address crime, Bedford said many opposing the president’s decision are acting “reflexively.” She pointed to similar opposition Democrats and the media gave to Trump when he focused on the economy on the 2024 campaign trail.
“That’s what’s happening with crime,” Bedford said Sunday on Fox News’s MediaBuzz. “A lot of these journalists live in really nice neighborhoods. They’re not exposed to the crime as much as other residents of D.C.”
“Well, there’s crime everywhere, but it’s not nearly as bad as in Ward 7 and Ward 8, where it’s the absolute worst, and so these Democrats and the media are against anything Trump tries to do,” Bedford said.
Bedford also cited a Washington Examiner report from last week showing that Ward 8’s crime rate is worse than Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. She also called Ward 8 more dangerous than South Africa, a country “infamous” for its murder rate.
Fox News contributor Richard Fowler asked Bedford about the solution to the district’s crime problem, saying he lives in Ward 8 and has not seen any National Guard members. Bedford responded that local leaders’ efforts are “obviously not working” and called Trump’s move “brilliant” on a political level.
“Because it forces Democrats to defend a status quo that is so obviously broken, and any normal person outside of the partisan tornado that we have here in Washington can see that it’s a popular position to try to stop crime,” Bedford said.
WASHINGTON, DC, IS UNFIT TO EVER BECOME A STATE
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, a Trump critic, criticized some Democrats’ opposition to the president’s crime cleanup on Wednesday. He said people ought to express concern that Trump could go too far but that the district’s crime has been a consistent problem since he moved to it 32 years ago.
Govs. Henry McMaster (R-SC) and Mike DeWine (R-OH) both announced Sunday night that they were deploying National Guard members to the district. McMaster is deploying 200 troops, while DeWine is providing 150.
