Media personalities who lost their jobs over news bias in 2025
Some television personalities lost their jobs this year due to political or journalistic missteps. Here’s who they are and what happened:
Matthew Dowd
MS NOW’s Katy Tur Reports was live when a gunman opened fire at Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk and fatally shot him in the neck on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Graphic footage captured Kirk recoiling as a single gunshot was heard.
“We don’t know any of the full details of this that we don’t know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration,” then-MS NOW contributor Matthew Dowd said, before it was confirmed Kirk had been killed. “We don’t know anything.”
While discussing Kirk, Tur posed the question, “Charlie Kirk is a divisive figure, polarizing, lightning rod, whatever term you want to use. Why?”
🚨OMG — MSNBC just said the shooter might have been “a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration.”

Dowd replied, “He’s one of the [Make America Great Again’s] most prominent voices online. He hosts a near-daily podcast.”
“He opines on almost everything. He’s been very closely aligned with the president since his initial run for office in 2015, 2016. And his ties to Trump really elevated his own brand,” Dowd added.
Dowd said that Kirk is “constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech, aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.”

MS NOW President Rebecca Kutler apologized for the coverage on Wednesday evening, saying, “During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable. We apologize for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”
That same day, when Dowd was on air reacting to the news, MS NOW fired him.
Dowd went on to sell apparel with the phrase: “Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words lead to hateful actions.” Below the quote is the date “September 11, 2025,” the day after Kirk died. The apparel ranges from $28 to $52
“All proceeds will go to Holocaust survivor-led, digital campaign, #ItStartedWithWords,”
Dowd wrote on X at the time.
Ever since his firing, Dowd has criticized his former network.
Terry Moran
ABC News fired correspondent Terry Moran over his since-deleted X post criticizing White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller.
Moran notably nabbed an interview with President Donald Trump on behalf of ABC News 100 days into Trump’s second term. Early on Sunday, Moran decided to share his personal thoughts on Miller, who has worked in the Trump administration since the president’s first term.
“The thing about Stephen Miller is not that he is the brains behind Trumpism. Yes, he is one of the people who conceptualizes the impulses of the Trumpist movement and translates them into policy. But that’s not what’s interesting about Miller,” Moran wrote. “It’s not brains. It’s bile. Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He’s a world-class hater. You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”
By the time Miller responded to the post, it had been deleted from X. However, the message continued to circulate via screenshots.

“The most important fact about Terry’s full public meltdown is what it shows about the corporate press in America,” Miller responded on X. “For decades, the privileged anchors and reporters narrating and gatekeeping our society have been radicals adopting a journalist’s pose. Terry pulled off his mask.”
Moran stood by his comments and went on to launch a Substack to continue his commentary writing. According to Moran, most legacy media outlets agree with his stance on Trump.
