Media Bury Anti-ICE Car-Ramming In Shooting Coverage

A Federalist article by Shawn Fleetwood reports on a deadly incident in Minneapolis in which an ICE officer shot and killed a woman during an immigration-related operation. The piece cites video that appears to show the woman attempting to run down an agent with her vehicle, and quotes DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin describing the act as a “weaponized” vehicle attack and domestic terrorism. The article accuses mainstream outlets (NBC, The Guardian, USA Today, The New York Times) of downplaying the car-ramming in their headlines and coverage, rather emphasizing officials who dispute the federal account or characterizations of the operation. Fleetwood frames this as part of a broader pattern of legacy media vilifying immigration enforcement and obscuring violence directed at ICE officers.

It didn’t take long, but America’s propaganda media have (unsurprisingly) already begun to whitewash the anti-ICE violence at the heart of a shooting involving U.S. immigration officials.

On Wednesday, a U.S. immigration official reportedly fired upon and killed a woman who was allegedly antagonizing agents during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis. The most pertinent detail about this story, however, is that video of the incident appears to show the suspect in question attempting to run down an agent with her vehicle.

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin provided further information about the incident, writing on X, “Today, ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism.”

“This is the direct consequence of constant attacks and demonization of our officers by sanctuary politicians who fuel and encourage rampant assaults on our law enforcement. These men and women who are simply enforcing the law on the books are facing 1,300% increase in assaults against them and an 8,000% increase in death threats,” McLaughlin wrote.

Having spent the past year vilifying the Trump administration’s deportations and immigration enforcement operations, it came as no surprise when legacy media leapt into action to obscure the car-ramming in its immediate coverage of the incident.

“Minneapolis driver shot and killed by ICE officer during immigration-related operation, DHS says,” one NBC News headline reads.

The Guardian took a similar route with its headline, which reads, “Woman in Minnesota fatally shot by ICE agent during raid, video shows.” The outlet also waited until the sixth paragraph to inform readers of DHS’s assessment of the situation, while placing a claim from left-wing radical Rep. Ilham Omar, D-Minn., that the suspect was a “legal observer” in the second paragraph.

USA Today’s page providing updates on the shooting also declined to mention the car-ramming component in its headline. As of publication, the article’s headline reads, “ICE shooting live updates: Agent fatally shoots woman in Minneapolis.”

Other outlets adopted similar framing in their headlines.

Meanwhile, the hoax-peddling New York Times was more than happy to lead with the views of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has all but invited attacks on immigration officials in his past anti-ICE rhetoric. Following the incident, the outlet’s “live updates” page ran with the headline, “Minneapolis Mayor Disputes Federal Account of Fatal ICE Shooting.” It has since been updated to “Minnesota Officials Dispute Federal Account of Fatal ICE Shooting” above an excerpt highlighting comments from disgraced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who called the DHS’ account of the incident “propaganda.”
