GOP challenger demands McCarthy’s censure over withheld Jan. 6 footage
Trump-aligned Republican Calls for Censure of Kevin McCarthy over Jan. 6 Footage
David Giglio, a passionate MAGA Republican running to unseat Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) in California’s 20th Congressional District, is demanding accountability from House Republicans. Giglio is calling for a censure of McCarthy for his refusal to release surveillance footage of the January 6th Capitol riot to the public.
Giglio, who recently launched his challenge against McCarthy, believes that holding the former speaker accountable through a censure is necessary due to his withholding of crucial footage during his time in office.
Democrats Face Uphill Battle to Maintain Senate Majority
“Kevin McCarthy had the opportunity to fulfill his promise and release the footage to the American people,” Giglio stated in a press release shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “By doing so, he could have dismantled the Democrats’ narrative and put an end to the DOJ’s unjust witch hunt almost a year ago.”
Giglio, who previously ran for Congress in California’s 13th District in 2022, argues that McCarthy’s decision to keep the recordings private allowed the Department of Justice and the FBI to operate without accountability, comparing their actions to the Gestapo. He claims that individuals were incarcerated without due process and subjected to biased trials in front of radical activist judges and tainted DC juries.
Shortly after McCarthy became House speaker in January, he expressed his willingness to release private security footage of the Capitol riot. However, his motives were questioned when he shared over 40,000 hours of raw footage with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson in February. Carlson initially downplayed the severity of the insurrection, describing it as “mostly peaceful chaos.” He was subsequently fired from the network in April.
McCarthy defended his decision to share the footage with Carlson, emphasizing his commitment to transparency. He stated, ”I said from the beginning, transparency. And so what I wanted to produce for everybody is exactly what I said. The people could actually look at it and see what’s happened that day.”
During McCarthy’s tenure as speaker, the footage remained undisclosed. However, his successor, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), recently announced plans to make over 40,000 hours of tapes available on a public website. This decision has garnered praise from Republican lawmakers and former President Donald Trump, who believe it will allow the public, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media to independently assess what transpired on that day.
In addition to calling for McCarthy’s censure, Giglio is advocating for the release and pardon of all individuals imprisoned for crimes related to the January 6th events. He also believes that several members of the Jan. 6 House select committee should be removed from Congress for deceiving the American people and wasting taxpayer dollars on a politically motivated investigation.
“Republicans in Congress must demand accountability from the former Speaker through a formal censure, ensuring that future leaders prioritize truth and justice over political gain,” Giglio asserted.

How could the release of the surveillance footage provide valuable insights into the events of January 6th and potentially hold those responsible accountable?
E the House Minority Leader in 2019, Giglio alleges that the congressman made a promise to release the surveillance footage of the Capitol riot to the public. However, nearly a year later, the footage has yet to be made available, prompting Giglio to demand a censure of McCarthy.
The January 6th Capitol riot was a significant event in American history, raising concerns about the security and integrity of the nation’s democratic institutions. The release of the surveillance footage could provide valuable insight into the events that unfolded that day and potentially shed light on the individuals responsible for inciting the violence.
Giglio argues that McCarthy’s refusal to release the footage undermines the transparency and accountability that should be expected from elected officials. By withholding the footage, McCarthy allows the Department of Justice and the FBI to operate without proper oversight, potentially allowing them to pursue biased and unjust actions against individuals involved in the Capitol riot.
Furthermore, Giglio compares their actions to that of the Gestapo, highlighting the potential for individuals to be incarcerated without due process and subjected to unfair trials. This raises concerns about the erosion of civil liberties and the impartiality of the judicial system.
It is important to note that Giglio’s call for a censure of McCarthy may be motivated, at least in part, by his political ambitions. As a Trump-aligned Republican, Giglio’s campaign against McCarthy is likely rooted in a desire to align himself closely with the former president and gain support from the conservative base.
However, regardless of political motivations, the demand for accountability and transparency from elected officials is crucial in maintaining the public’s trust in the democratic process. Americans deserve to know the truth about what transpired on January 6th and should have access to the information necessary to hold those responsible accountable.
In conclusion, David Giglio, a Trump-aligned Republican running to unseat Rep. Kevin McCarthy, is calling for a censure of McCarthy over his refusal to release the surveillance footage of the January 6th Capitol riot. Giglio argues that McCarthy’s decision to withhold the footage undermines transparency and allows for potential abuses of power within the Department of Justice and the FBI. While Giglio’s motivations may be political, the demand for accountability and transparency from elected officials is crucial in upholding the integrity of democratic institutions.
