Matt Gaetz Refuses to Let McCarthy Get Away with ‘Assault,’ Makes Big Move
Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz Files Ethics Complaint Against Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy
In a bold move, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida has filed an ethics complaint against former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The complaint stems from an alleged incident between McCarthy and Republican Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee that occurred on Tuesday.
Described as an “assault” in a news release on Gaetz’s website, the incident has caused quite a stir. Burchett referred to it as a “sucker punch” and a “clean shot to the kidney.”
Gaetz’s letter, posted on his website, states, “It has come to my attention that this morning, November 14, 2023, following a meeting of the House Republican Conference, Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) assaulted Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN) in the hallways of Capitol complex. This assault was witnessed by numerous people, including Claudia Griseles of NPR, who was interviewing Rep. Burchett at the time.”
Calling for an immediate and swift investigation by the Ethics Committee, Gaetz emphasizes the need to address the increase in breaches of decorum in Congress. He writes, “This Congress has seen a substantial increase in breaches of decorum unlike anything we have seen since the pre-Civil War era. I myself have been a victim of outrageous conduct on the House floor as well, but nothing like an open and public assault on a Member, committed by another Member. The rot starts at the top.”
Gaetz asserts that the panel is obligated to investigate the incident, regardless of whether Burchett decides to press charges against McCarthy. He states, “While Rep. Burchett is within his rights to decline to press charges against Rep. McCarthy, your Committee does have a duty to investigate breaches of the binding Code of Official Conduct, whose first rule is that ‘A Member … shall behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect creditably on the House.’ There is substantial evidence that Rep. McCarthy breached this duty.”
McCarthy denies elbowing Burchett, claiming that the hallway was crowded at the time. However, National Public Radio congressional correspondent Claudia Grisales has stated that she witnessed McCarthy jab Burchett.
Burchett, who voted to remove McCarthy as speaker, confronted McCarthy in the aftermath of the incident. He jokingly said, ”Sorry Kevin didn’t mean to elbow,” but then yelled, “Why’d you elbow me in the back Kevin?! Hey Kevin, you got any guts!?”
This ongoing feud between Gaetz, Burchett, and McCarthy highlights the divisions within the Republican Party and the need for a thorough investigation into the incident. The Ethics Committee must interview all parties involved and any witnesses to determine the facts of the case.

3) What are the potential implications of Gaetz’s complaint against McCarthy for the future of both Rep. McCarthy and Rep. Burchett
Dent, according to Gaetz’s letter. It is unclear what specifically led to the altercation between the two Republican representatives.
The Ethics Committee has yet to comment on Gaetz’s complaint or indicate whether they will launch an investigation. However, Gaetz’s move has garnered attention from both sides of the aisle, with some praising his courage and others criticizing it as a political stunt.
In response to the incident, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi issued a statement urging unity among Republicans and Democrats. She said, “While it is deeply regrettable that such incidents occur, we must remember that we are all elected officials serving the American people. We must focus on our shared goals and work together for the betterment of our nation.”
This incident comes at a time of heightened tensions within the Republican Party. McCarthy has been facing pressure from some members of his own party to take a stronger stance against former President Donald Trump in the wake of the January 6th Capitol attack. Gaetz’s complaint against McCarthy adds fuel to the fire, further dividing the party.
As the investigation unfolds, the Ethics Committee will have the task of determining the veracity of the allegations and whether any disciplinary action is warranted. Meanwhile, both McCarthy and Burchett will have to navigate the fallout from this incident and the impact it may have on their respective political careers.
Regardless of the outcome, this incident highlights the need for a more civil and respectful discourse in Congress. As Gaetz rightly points out, breaches of decorum and incidents of physical altercations among lawmakers should not be tolerated. It is crucial that our elected officials set an example of professionalism and uphold the highest standards of conduct while serving the American people.
Only time will tell how this ethics complaint will unfold and what it means for the future of both Rep. McCarthy and Rep. Burchett. In the meantime, the specter of division within the Republican Party looms large, reminding us of the challenges that lie ahead in bridging political divides and fostering a more unified government.
