Massie says MTG’s resignation is ‘very sad’ for the country

Rep. Thomas Massie expressed sadness over Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s announcement that she will resign from Congress early next year. Greene, known for her confrontations with former President Donald Trump-who recently withdrew his support and labeled her a “disgrace”-had pushed for the release of the epstein files alongside Massie, defying Trump and party lines. Massie praised Greene as a true representative and urged the public to read her resignation statement, highlighting its honesty. Greene cited receiving death threats amid her outspoken criticism of Trump and the Republican party’s direction, emphasizing her goal to hold the party accountable and put America first. The reaction among lawmakers has been mixed: some Republicans expressed regret over losing her vote in a narrowly divided House, while others supported her decision. Democrats also acknowledged the challenges Greene faced within her own party. The resignation follows weeks of tension between Greene and Trump, who claimed her departure was due to poor poll numbers and impending primary challenges.

Massie says MTG’s resignation is ‘very sad’ for the country

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) expressed sadness over Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) announcement of her resignation from Congress following weeks of tension between her and President Donald Trump

Greene, who pushed for the release of the Epstein files alongside Massie, announced on Friday evening that she would be resigning at the start of next year.

“I’m very sad for our country but so happy for my friend Marjorie,” Massie posted on X about Greene’s announcement. “I’ll miss her tremendously.”

Massie praised Greene and encouraged the public to read her statement.

“She embodies what a true Representative should be,” he continued. “Everyone should read her statement; there’s more honesty expressed in these four pages than most politicians will speak in a lifetime.”

Massie and Greene joined Democrats in signing the discharge petition forcing a vote to release the Epstein files, defying Trump and their party.

Greene’s announcement came after weeks of feuding between her and Trump. The president accused Greene of being a “traitor,” as the Georgia congresswoman spoke out in recent weeks against the president over the cost of healthcare and the release of the Epstein files.

REPUBLICANS GIVEN GREEN LIGHT TO VOTE FOR EPSTEIN LIST: ‘WE’RE DONE WITH WORDS’

Trump withdrew his support of Greene last week, calling her a “disgrace” to the Republican Party.

Following Greene’s announcement, he told ABC News’s Rachel Scott that Greene’s announcement is “great news” for the country.

Massie responded to Scott’s post on X, pushing back on Trump’s comments.

“No, this is not great news for our country,” he wrote.

Trump later posted on Truth Social on Friday evening that Greene had resigned because of her poor poll numbers.

“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown, because of PLUMMETING Poll Numbers, and not wanting to face a Primary Challenger with a strong Trump Endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!), has decided to call it ‘quits,’” he said.

Greene said since she has become more outspoken against the president, she has received death threats.

“[My] only goal and desire has ever been to hold the Republican Party accountable for the promises it makes to the American people and put America First,” she said.

While the reaction from Greene’s colleagues has been minimal so far, some have already been outspoken about it.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) criticized Greene for resigning, arguing that losing her is a “problem for our conference” due to Republicans’ slim majority in the House.

“18 votes, that’s the minimum we can have, and it leaves no room for any type of error,” Malliotakis said during an appearance on Fox News Live.

“I wish these members would wait and just fulfill the remainder of their term instead of leaving mid-term and leaving us with a vacancy, for a few months that will really cripple our ability to get things done,” she added.

Malliotakis said Massie is a vote that House Republicans can’t rely on.

“We have Thomas Massie, who votes no on nearly everything, so he’s not a vote that we can count on to pass any type of bill,” she said. “Even when it was significant tax cuts for senior citizens, our middle-class families, all the good things that we’ve done this year, he has voted against, and that’s unfortunate.”

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), who also helped champion the release of the Epstein files with Massie and Greene, said it was “sad” to see the retaliation against Greene.

“She was an original Donald Trump supporter. She was there for Donald Trump since 2015 when Donald Trump was a few percent in the polls and simply because she signed the discharge petition … there’s no room for her in Donald Trump’s party,” Khanna said.

Other Republican lawmakers have expressed their support for Greene.

“Unfortunately, there’s a lot of truth to what Marjorie had to say,” Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) posted on X. “I can’t blame her for leaving this institution that has betrayed the American people.”

Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) posted on X that he wished “Marjorie the very best in her future endeavors.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who recently announced his California gubernatorial bid, said on CNN that he “doesn’t know what to make” of Greene’s announcement, but hopes she sticks around Congress long enough to vote on expiring Obamacare subsidies.

REPUBLICANS RISK OBAMACARE PARALYSIS WITH RENEWED HEALTHCARE DEBATE

Swalwell said Democrats have had conversations with Republican lawmakers privately who’ve said they don’t like how Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) are leading the party.

“They think about it, but the No. 1 reason they won’t do it is personal security,” he said. “They said ‘the second I do that, my life changes, the death threats come out.’ … That’s the environment we’re in right now.”
