An article from the washington Examiner reports that Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) challenged Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, over her vow too arrest anyone who carries a gun in Washington,D.C. Pirro made the comment on Fox News amid a discussion of homicide and gun violence in the district. Massie argued against such a crackdown, noting that D.C. has operated under a “shall issue” carry regime as 2017 and suggesting he might own a gun in the district.Pirro’s remarks represent a shift from her earlier, tougher stance on gun control during her time as a Fox News commentator, though she has recently criticized the Biden management’s gun-control efforts and called for cracking down on illegal firearms in D.C. as a cause of homicide. The piece places this exchange within the broader national gun-rights debate and points readers to related stories.
Massie recoils at Pirro’s vow to arrest anyone who enters DC with a gun
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) bashed Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, over her vow to arrest anyone who entered Washington, D.C., with a firearm.
In an appearance on Fox News, Pirro voiced a tough stance on gun possession amid a wider discussion on homicide and gun violence in the district. Massie took issue with her stance, specifically her vow to arrest anyone with a gun in the District.
“The District of Columbia has been ‘shall issue’ since 2017 when the requirement that you must have a ‘good reason’ to carry a handgun was struck down. Non-residents can obtain a permit in DC — don’t ask me how I know,” Massie said in a post on X, hinting that he owned a gun while residing in the district.
The Monday comments from Pirro came as a shock to many, given the Trump administration’s previous outspoken stance in favor of gun rights.
“You bring a gun into the district, you mark my words: You’re going to jail. I don’t care if you have a license in another district and I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun owner somewhere else. You bring a gun into this district, count on going to jail and hope you get the gun back. And that makes all the difference,” Pirro said.
MASSIE SAYS CARRYING GUN ‘NOT A DEATH SENTENCE’ AS TRUMP OFFICIALS DEFEND PRETTI SHOOTING
Her comments are a departure from her previous vehement opposition to gun control laws, especially during her time as a Fox News commentator. In March 2024, she condemned the Biden administration for trying to pursue gun control laws, saying, “Criminals don’t care what laws you pass.”
Her recent rhetoric prior to Monday was about pursuing a crackdown on illegal firearms in Washington, which she blamed for a prior rise in homicides.
