Maryland oral surgeon found guilty of killing girlfriend with overdose.
Oral Surgeon Convicted of Murder in Girlfriend’s Overdose Death
ROCKVILLE, Md.—In a shocking turn of events, an oral surgeon has been found guilty of murder in the tragic death of his girlfriend. The victim, Sarah Harris, overdosed on anesthetic drugs that were administered by the defendant, James Ryan, at his Maryland home.
Jurors were presented with compelling evidence that Ryan had set up an intravenous stand to administer these addictive drugs to Harris, who was only 25 years old at the time. Tragically, she was discovered lifeless at Ryan’s Montgomery County residence in January 2022.
The Washington Post reports that Ryan now faces a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison. The date for his sentencing is yet to be determined.
Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death
An autopsy conducted on Harris confirmed that her demise was a result of intoxication from ketamine, propofol, and diazepam.
Prosecutors argued that Ryan displayed “an extreme indifference” towards Harris’ life by continuously supplying her with these dangerous drugs, despite her worsening addiction and declining health. Shockingly, she weighed only 83 pounds at the time of her death.
Montgomery County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Harrison emphasized that Ryan, being a skilled oral surgeon, was well aware of the risks associated with these drugs.
“And despite his vast knowledge and training in the field, he continuously provided these dangerous, deadly anesthetic drugs to Sarah Harris over a period of time even as he watched her deteriorate before his eyes,” the prosecutor passionately told the jurors.
Ryan chose not to testify during his trial at the Montgomery County Circuit Court. His defense team argued that Harris either died by suicide or accidentally administered a fatal overdose to herself. Defense attorney Thomas DeGonia informed the jurors that Harris had previously requested ketamine from Ryan to alleviate her depression months before her tragic passing.
It is worth noting that Harris had initially become acquainted with Ryan when she was a patient at his office in Germantown, Maryland. Their professional relationship eventually developed into a romantic one.
