Marjorie Taylor Greene criticizes Morris Brown College for reinstating mask requirement.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Blasts Atlanta College for Reinstating Mask Mandate
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has strongly criticized a small Atlanta college for reinstating a mask mandate and enforcing social distancing measures. The announcement from Morris Brown College, a historically black college with a student body of less than 500, stated that masks would be required for the next two weeks.
Greene Voices Opposition to COVID-19 Measures
In response, Greene took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express her frustration with what she sees as excessive COVID-19 precautions. “Americans have had enough COVID hysteria,” she wrote in a post, emphasizing her refusal to comply with the mandate.
The college’s announcement outlined the requirements for students and employees, including wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing. It also stated that students who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for five days and undergo contact tracing, following CDC guidelines. Additionally, the college emphasized that there would be no large gatherings, parties, or student events on campus for the next two weeks.
College President Kevin James emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and sought the cooperation of students in preventing another pandemic.
Backlash from Young Americans for Liberty
The mask mandate at Morris Brown College also drew criticism from Young Americans for Liberty, who pointed out that the mandate was being reinstated “this week” rather than during the height of the pandemic in 2020. The organization expressed disbelief, stating, “They really are going to try this again.”
While mask mandates have largely become less common as the pandemic recedes, nearly 100 colleges still have vaccine mandates in place, according to No College Mandates, an organization that monitors COVID-19 requirements on college campuses. Rutgers University, for example, has even threatened to unenroll students who do not comply with their vaccine mandate.
