Marine Corps Pilot Confirmed Dead After Combat Jet Crash Near San Diego Base
SAN DIEGO—Tragedy struck on Friday as a Marine Corps pilot lost their life in a devastating crash of a combat jet near a San Diego base, according to a statement released by the service.
The incident occurred at 11:54 p.m. on Thursday near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Searchers were able to recover the pilot at the crash site, as confirmed by the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing in a statement from its headquarters in Cherry Point, North Carolina.
The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the F/A-18D Hornet, belonged to the esteemed Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224. This squadron is based at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina.
The identity of the pilot will not be released until 24 hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been completed, the Marine Corps said.
A statement from Miramar clarified that the aircraft involved in the crash was not part of its air station.”>resident air wing but was operating from the air station.
The crash site, located on government property east of the air station, is approximately 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. The area is predominantly vacant land.
