Margot Robbie boasted in ‘Barbie’ pitch meetings about the movie’s potential to earn a billion dollars, but now admits she may have exaggerated.
Barbie Star Margot Robbie Sets High Expectations for Film’s Success
Margot Robbie, the star of the upcoming film “Barbie,” and also a producer on the project, revealed that she had lofty expectations for the movie’s financial success.
The highly-anticipated fantasy comedy, directed by Greta Gerwig, hit theaters on July 21. It follows Robbie’s character, Stereotypical Barbie, as she ventures out of Barbie Land and uncovers some surprising truths in the real world.
During an interview with Collider, Robbie shared her pitch to the studios, saying, “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director. And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”
While the film is expected to make between $95 million to $110 million, with some forecasters predicting it to rake in as much as $140 million, Robbie’s initial optimism showcases her belief in the project’s potential.
Positive Reception and Feminist Themes
Early reviews of “Barbie” have praised its overtly feminist themes and its ability to challenge patriarchal norms. An Entertainment Weekly reporter called it a “fierce, funny, and deeply feminist adventure.”
Ryan Gosling, who plays one of the Kens in the movie, also had high praise for Gerwig, describing her as a brilliant and inclusive person. He commended her ability to blend drama and comedy seamlessly, creating a unique and relatable experience for the audience.
With its strong female lead, empowering message, and talented cast, “Barbie” is set to make a splash at the box office and challenge societal norms.
