Manslaughter Investigation Opened After Fire Kills 11 at Home for Disabled Adults
PARIS (AP) — A Paris prosecutor has launched a preliminary judicial investigation for involuntary manslaughter aggravated by breach of safety rules, following a devastating fire that claimed the lives of 11 individuals at a vacation home for adults with disabilities in eastern France.
Wednesday’s fire tragically resulted in the deaths of 10 adults with slight intellectual disabilities and one accompanying person.
The judicial investigation aims to determine the cause of the fire, as stated by the prosecutor’s office.
It has been discovered that required safety standards were not met at the private vacation house located in the town of Wintzenheim in Alsace.
“The initial investigations have raised concerns about the legal and material safety conditions of the building,” which was accommodating 28 individuals, the statement explained.
The case has been transferred to a prosecutor in Paris due to the significant number of victims and the extensive nature of the investigation. Previously, it was under the supervision of the deputy prosecutor of Colmar in eastern France.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday while the vacationers were asleep.
Out of the individuals staying on the upper floor, only five survived, including three vacationers and two accompanying staff members. Fortunately, they were all discharged from the hospital by the end of the day on Wednesday, according to the statement.
Twelve others who were staying on the ground floor managed to evacuate.
This incident marks the deadliest fire in France since a blaze in August 2016 that claimed the lives of 14 people in a basement nightclub in the city of Rouen.
