Man shackled in Oregon mental health hospital escapes, gets stuck in muddy pond.
Man Charged with Attempted Murder Arrested After Daring Escape
PORTLAND, Ore.—In a thrilling turn of events, a man charged with attempted murder managed to escape from a psychiatric hospital in Oregon while fully shackled, only to be found floundering in a muddy pond.
Christopher Pray’s audacious escape came to an end when he was discovered buried up to the armpits in the pond in Portland, thanks to the diligent efforts of the Oregon State Police. With the assistance of Portland Fire & Rescue personnel, Pray was extricated from the muddy depths using ropes and swiftly taken to the hospital. Although he initially provided a false name, a sharp-eyed hospital employee recognized him, prompting the immediate involvement of the police.
Investigation Underway
The Oregon State Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Pray’s escape on Wednesday. Despite being restrained with leg shackles, a belly chain, and handcuffs, Pray managed to slide into the driver’s seat of the van transporting him and drive away while the driver was momentarily outside the vehicle.
Pray now faces a slew of charges, including attempted murder, robbery, assault, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. These charges have been filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court, which is located in Portland. Following a determination of his unfitness to proceed with trial, Pray was sent to the Oregon State Hospital on Wednesday, as documented in court records.
Efforts to reach Pray’s lawyer for comment were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
