Man sentenced for leaving baby after MLB pitcher’s daughter gives birth in woods.
Man Sentenced for Endangering Newborn Baby in Freezing Temperatures
In a shocking incident last year, a 45-year-old New Hampshire man, George Theberge, has been sentenced to at least a year in jail for endangering the life of a newborn baby. The incident occurred when MLB Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley’s daughter gave birth in the woods during subfreezing temperatures.
Theberge pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor child endangerment charge and reached a deal with prosecutors. In addition to his sentence, he will serve an extra six months behind bars for a probation violation and a drug charge.
Authorities revealed that the baby boy was left alone in a tent for over an hour on December 26, with temperatures dropping to a chilling 15 degrees (minus 9.4 degrees Celsius).

A police affidavit identified Mr. Theberge as the boyfriend of the baby’s mother, Alexandra Eckersley, 26. Alexandra is accused of abandoning her son without proper clothing or heat. She has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, reckless conduct, and other counts and has been released on bail. Her trial is scheduled for next year.
According to Alexandra Eckersley’s lawyer, she was unaware of her pregnancy and gave birth alone. She immediately called 911 and led the police to the baby. The lawyer also mentioned that Ms. Eckersley faced medical complications. Since then, she has completed rehabilitation programs, remains sober, and has regular visits with her son.
At the time of Alexandra’s arrest, the Eckersley family released a statement expressing their lack of prior knowledge about her pregnancy. They emphasized that she has struggled with “severe mental illness her entire life” and that they have always done their best to provide her with help and support.
Dennis Eckersley, a former MLB player, had a successful career spanning 24 seasons. He played for teams like Cleveland, Boston, the Cubs, Oakland, and the Cardinals. Eckersley won the AL Cy Young and MVP awards in 1992 while playing for the Oakland Athletics. He retired from broadcasting Boston Red Sox games last year.
