Man jailed for fatal Apple Store crash due to uncharged monitoring bracelet.
Man Who Drove SUV Into Apple Store Has Bail Revoked
A judge has made the decision to revoke bail for Bradley Rein, the man who drove his SUV into a Massachusetts Apple store, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to nearly two dozen others. Rein, who was confined to his home while awaiting trial, had his bail revoked after his GPS monitoring bracelet failed to work multiple times over the weekend. The bracelet was not charged, leading to accusations of negligence on Rein’s part.
Rein’s defense lawyer, Joan Fund, believes that revoking his bail was an overreaction. In an email to The Associated Press, Fund stated, “It is unfortunate that the court’s penalty was disproportionate to my client’s failure to keep the monitoring device fully charged.”
Rein had previously pleaded not guilty to an upgraded murder charge and was allowed to remain free on $100,000 bail. However, he had to adhere to certain conditions, including not driving and wearing a GPS tracking device.
Law enforcement officials claim that Rein was driving at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) just moments before the crash occurred in Hingham on November 21, 2022. The incident resulted in the death of a construction worker and injuries to 22 others.
According to court documents, Rein told police that he was searching for an eyeglasses store in the shopping center when his right foot got stuck on the accelerator. He attempted to brake with his left foot but was unable to stop.
