Connecticut Man Discovers Bag of Cash, Faces Larceny⁢ Charges

A Connecticut ‍man had an unexpected stroke of luck when he⁤ stumbled upon⁤ a bag containing nearly ⁣$5,000 in cash in a parking lot. Feeling like he had won the lottery, he made the decision to keep it. Little did ‌he ‍know, this choice would lead⁤ to serious consequences.

Three months later, the man, Robert Withington, found himself charged with larceny. It turns out​ that the bag, clearly marked ​with a bank’s insignia, actually belonged to the town’s tax department. Inside were not only the cash ⁢but also various documents identifying the rightful ⁤owner‌ as the⁣ town of Trumbull.

Withington insists that he did not steal the money and claims he had no knowledge of the bag’s true owner. According to him, it‌ was​ an impulsive decision made in ‌the heat of the ​moment. “It’s not like this ⁤was planned⁣ out,” he explained. “Everything was in the ⁣moment and it was like I hit the lottery. That was it.”

Despite attempts to⁤ reach Withington for comment, ‍he has not responded. The money⁣ initially went missing on May 30, ⁢and ‍police discovered that an employee from the Trumbull Tax Collector’s office had misplaced the bag during ‌a deposit at the bank. After months of investigation, it was‍ revealed that Withington had unknowingly picked up⁤ the bag, which had been dropped outside the bank.

Withington maintains his innocence, stating, “If I knew I‍ was wrong ⁢in the first place, I would have given it right back. I didn’t think I⁢ was doing anything wrong.” However, during‌ police interviews, he admitted to being⁢ at⁣ the bank that day ‌and taking the bag, believing he had no‍ obligation to return it to its rightful ‌owner.

As a dog training business owner​ with a clean record, Withington’s integrity ⁢is vouched for‌ by his customers. Nevertheless, he now faces charges of third-degree larceny, a felony that carries a potential prison sentence of up‌ to five years ⁣and a fine of up to $5,000.
