Mamdani pitches NYC housing initiative to Trump with newspaper mockup: ‘Let’s Build’
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani pitched President Donald Trump on a sizable housing initiative during a Thursday visit to the White House.
“I had a productive meeting with President Trump this afternoon,” Mamdani posted on X, featuring a photo of the two in the Oval Office. “I’m looking forward to building more housing in New York City.”
In the photo, the president held a mock newspaper with the headline: “TRUMP TO CITY: LET’S BUILD.” The fake headline was similar to a real one that stated: “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD.” In 1975, then-President Gerald Ford declined to provide a federal bailout to a bankrupt New York City. Trump held the real newspaper in his other hand, while Mamdani stood next to him.
During the closed-door White House meeting, the mayor appeared to propose 12,000 new housing units in New York City.
“Backs new era of housing,” the newspaper mockup read, showing Trump’s presidential portrait. “Trump delivers 12,000+ homes. Most since 1973.”
The Washington Examiner contacted the White House for comment on the meeting and housing pitch.
Shortly after winning the general election in November, Mamdani first met Trump at the White House. The two leaders were unusually friendly despite their personal attacks against each other last year.
A spokesperson for the mayor said Trump asked Mamdani to return with “some big ideas” for collaborating to “build things” in New York City, and that Mamdani ultimately followed through on the offer.
COLUMBIA STUDENT RELEASED FROM ICE DETAINMENT AFTER TRUMP-MAMDANI MEETING
After posting a photo of the newspaper mockup, Mamdani said Trump promised to release a Columbia University student who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The student, Elmina Aghayeva, was ultimately released on Thursday.
It remains to be seen whether Mamdani and Trump’s amicable relationship will last.
