Mamdani holds on to double-digit lead going into election week: Poll
A recent Marist poll shows new York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani holding a substantial 16-point lead over his closest rival, former governor Andrew Cuomo, indicating that the city may be on the verge of electing its first-ever socialist mayor. The poll, conducted from October 24 to 28, found that 48% of likely voters support Mamdani, 32% back Cuomo, and 16% favor Republican Curtis Sliwa, with 3% undecided. If Sliwa were to drop out, Mamdani’s lead would increase further. Mamdani previously won the Democratic primary decisively against Cuomo and others, surprising many political observers. Cuomo, representing a centrist alternative and supported by traditional Democratic figures, struggles to gain momentum, even after incumbent Mayor Eric Adams ended his reelection bid. Sliwa has resisted calls to exit the race, rejecting suggestions that his candidacy indirectly aids mamdani. The poll surveyed 1,134 adults and has a margin of error of ±3.5%.
Mamdani holds on to double-digit lead going into election week: Poll
A poll released Thursday handed New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani a wide lead over his closest rival, suggesting the Big Apple is inching ever closer to electing its first-ever socialist mayor next week.
Mamdani holds a 16-point lead over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, according to the Marist survey.
The poll conducted from Oct. 24 to 28 showed 48% of voters back the socialist candidate, 32% support Cuomo, and 16% are set to cast ballots for Curtis Sliwa, a Republican. Three percent remain undecided.
If Sliwa were to drop out of the contest, as he has been urged to do, Mamdani would receive the backing of 51% of likely voters compared with 44% for Cuomo, the Marist poll wrote.
The poll echoes surveys that similarly project an easy victory for Mamdani, whose decisive win in the city’s Democratic primary over Cuomo and other contestants earlier this year shocked many political pundits.
Cuomo has the backing of more traditional Democratic figures and is viewed as the centrist alternative to Mamdani. However, his campaign has struggled to gain traction, even after the other leading candidate in the race, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, ended his reelection campaign.
Sliwa has been pushed to exit the race to hand more votes to Cuomo, but he has refused to do so.
“How dare you, people who know nothing about politics, suggest that everybody who’s going to vote for me is going to be reborn. ‘We love Andrew Cuomo,’” Sliwa said during a recent interview on the Nate Friedman show that went viral earlier this month.
SLIWA SLAMS SANTOS’S TRUMP-COMMUTED SENTENCE, DREAMED OF HIM ‘BEING CELLMATES’ WITH ADAMS
“He killed all these elderlies [in nursing homes]. He’s a sexual harasser. … This is the result of the Democrats’ self-destruction, so I’m supposed to help them. How come they don’t help themselves?” the feisty Republican added. “Andrew Cuomo failed everybody in that primary. He even admitted it. Now he’s basically saying, ‘I can’t win without Sliwa votes.’ Where are your votes? Why don’t you spend your money? And they’ve got millions. … Go out, get your own vote.”
The Marist poll surveyed 1,134 adults and was conducted from Oct. 24 to 28. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
