Mamdani father’s role on terrorist-tied anti-Israel group exposed
The article reveals that Mahmood Mamdani, father of New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, serves on the advisory policy council of an anti-Israel association called The Gaza Tribunal, which is linked to terrorism. Mahmood Mamdani has faced criticism after excerpts from his 2004 book resurfaced, in which he expresses sympathy for suicide bombers and describes them as a “category of soldier” involved in modern political violence. The Gaza Tribunal supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel and accuses the Israeli military of genocide in Gaza. The group has connections to individuals with terrorist ties, including Sami Al-Arian, who was deported from the U.S. for aiding a terrorist organization. Mahmood Mamdani is a professor at Columbia University, a campus noted for anti-Israel protests following Hamas’s attack on Israel in 2023. Zohran Mamdani himself has been scrutinized for his anti-Israel positions and associations, including defending the BDS movement and controversial comments made during his campaign. Billionaire Bill Ackman has publicly criticized Zohran Mamdani based on his father’s remarks, highlighting opposition to the candidate among New York City’s political and community leaders. The article underscores the intense resistance Zohran Mamdani faces in his mayoral race from Democratic incumbents and political elites.
Mamdani father’s role on terrorist-tied anti-Israel group exposed as suicide bomber comments resurface
New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani‘s father, Mahmood Mamdani, sits on the advisory policy council of an anti-Israel organization tied to terrorism, according to the group’s website.
The revelation, first reported by Fox News, comes as the elder Mamdani is facing backlash after a questionable excerpt of his 21-year-old book resurfaced, expressing his sympathy for suicide bombers.
“Suicide bombing needs to be understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized as a mark of barbarism,” Mahmood Mamdani wrote in his 2004 book Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror.
Mahmood Mamdani’s remarks are notable, considering his role at The Gaza Tribunal, an organization that supports the movement to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel amid its ongoing war with Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
Founded last year in London, the Gaza Tribunal accuses the Israeli military of committing genocide against Palestinians. Despite the group’s stated goal to “legitimize and encourage civil society solidarity initiatives around the world,” the founder and some of its members are tied to terrorism.
Sami Al-Arian, a former University of South Florida professor who is associated with the Gaza Tribunal, admitted to conspiring to aid the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group in 2006. The federal government then deported him to Turkey as part of a plea deal.
Mahmood Mamdani attended the group’s official launch in November 2024, according to the Gaza Tribunal’s website. He teaches anthropology, political science, and African studies at Columbia University, where some of the most infamous anti-Israel protests have taken place since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The father’s book excerpt lionizing suicide bombers, many of whom were aimed at Israeli civilians by Palestinian groups, resurfaced on social media Thursday night.
“We need to recognize the suicide bomber, first and foremost, as a category of soldier,” Mamdani wrote.
He added, “Does not the suicide bomber join both aspects of our humanity, particularly as it has been fashioned by political modernity, in that we are willing to subordinate life—both our own and that of others—to objectives we consider higher than life?”
Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who is helping lead an anti-Mamdani campaign alongside other donors, criticized the 33-year-old socialist candidate over his father’s remarks.
“The apple…doesn’t fall far from the tree,” Ackman wrote on X.
“I am opposed to you being mayor because your policies will be extremely damaging to NYC and all of its residents, in particular the most vulnerable New Yorkers,” he added in a lengthy subsequent post, likely referring to New York City’s large Jewish population. Ackman is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.
The Washington Examiner contacted the Mamdani campaign for comment.
Zohran Mamdani has faced intense scrutiny over his anti-Israel views, including his refusal to condemn the anti-Israel phrase “globalize the intifada.” He also defended the BDS movement in May, saying it “is consistent with my core of my politics, which is non-violence.”
He has also come under fire for associating himself with a left-wing influencer who said “America deserved” the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack, during his primary campaign, and for praising a group convicted of funding Islamic terrorists.
MAMDANI VS EVERYBODY: SOCIALIST NYC MAYOR CANDIDATE HAS ALL SIDES RISING TO TAKE HIM ON
The New York state assemblyman is expected to face strong resistance in his bid for mayor, with New York City’s elite looking to unite behind an alternative candidate ahead of the general election.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, both of whom are Democrats running as independents, are intent on keeping Mamdani out of the mayor’s office. It remains to be seen if they join forces by November.
