Malaysia cancels music festival due to same-sex kiss by The 1975.

Malaysia Music Festival Cut Short After ‍Bandmates Share a Kiss

In a bold ⁣act ⁣of protest against ⁢Malaysia’s laws against homosexuality, two bandmates from ⁢The 1975 shared a kiss during a music festival. Lead singer Matty Healy delivered a powerful speech⁢ condemning the discriminatory laws ⁤before the kiss⁣ took place. However, their actions resulted in a ban from the country and the ‌cancellation of two days’ worth of performances at the Good Vibes festival.

“We deeply regret to announce that the remaining schedule of⁣ Good Vibes Festival 2023 (GVF2023), planned for today and tomorrow has been cancelled following the controversial conduct and remarks ⁢made by UK artist Matty‍ Healy from the band The 1975,” the festival wrote ‌in a statement. “This decision⁢ adheres to the immediate cancellation directive issued at 1:20 PM, 22 July 2023, by the Ministry of Communications and Digital. The Ministry⁢ has ⁣underlined its unwavering ⁣stance against any ‌parties that challenge,⁣ ridicule, or ⁣contravene Malaysian laws.”

The festival expressed its apologies to ⁢ticket holders, vendors, sponsors, and partners, assuring that refunds will be provided. However, the details regarding the refund process are yet to be determined.

Standing Firm on Malaysian Laws

“There will be no compromise with any party that ‍challenges, belittles, or violates Malaysian laws,” stated Communications and ‍Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil in a Facebook post.

This is not the first time Matty Healy has taken a stand ‍on ⁣such issues. In a previous performance in the United Arab Emirates, he kissed a male concertgoer, resulting in authorities attempting to⁢ arrest him. ⁢However, he managed to ⁤evade capture and continue his tour in Japan.

It is disheartening ‍to note that a total of 64 countries, primarily in Africa and the Middle East, have laws ⁣against homosexual‌ acts. In Asia, countries like Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and ‌Papua New Guinea have⁤ joined⁤ Malaysia in criminalizing‍ sexuality.
