Poll shows most Virginians oppose electric vehicle mandate
Virginians Express Opposition to State’s Electric Vehicle Mandate
While some Virginians were previously unaware of their state’s mandate to only sell electric vehicles after 2035, the majority of residents are strongly against it. According to a recent poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, Inc., 57% of respondents expressed their desire for the Virginia General Assembly to repeal the mandate, while only 30% believed it should remain in place, and 13% were unsure. Interestingly, nearly half of the participants were unaware of the mandate prior to taking part in the survey.
Strong Opposition to the Mandate
Among those who were aware of the mandate, a significant 68% expressed their opposition to it, while a quarter were in favor. On the other hand, among those who were previously unaware, 35% supported the mandate, while 45% were against it.
Political Divide
When examining the political affiliations of the respondents, it was found that 38% of Democrats were in favor of the mandate, but even within this group, 45% still wanted it repealed. On the other hand, nearly three-quarters of Republicans were against the mandate, as were 54% of independent respondents.
A total of 625 registered voters participated in the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
The mandate, which mirrors California’s ban on gas-powered vehicles by 2035, was passed during the tenure of former Democratic Governor Ralph Northam. However, the General Assembly failed to pass legislation last year that would have blocked the mandate.
