Most Iowa GOP voters open to supporting different candidate: Poll.
A Majority of Iowa Republican Caucusgoers Still Undecided on Presidential Nominee
As the anticipation builds for the first Republican National Committee debate, a recent poll conducted by NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom reveals that a significant 52% of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa are open to being swayed in their choice of presidential nominee.
Trump and DeSantis Supporters Open to Persuasion
Even among staunch supporters of former President Donald Trump, 34% admitted they could be persuaded to vote for another candidate, while 66% remain firmly committed to Trump. Similarly, 69% of Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) supporters expressed openness to considering alternative candidates, with 31% declaring their unwavering support for the Florida governor.
Currently, Trump holds the lead as the preferred choice among Iowa caucus attendees, with a commanding 42% support, placing him 19 points ahead of DeSantis.
Countdown to the Iowa Republican Presidential Caucuses
The Iowa Republican presidential caucuses are scheduled for mid-January next year, giving candidates five months to campaign, fundraise, and win over voters. Many GOP contenders have already made appearances at the Iowa State Fair, including Trump, who initially had no plans to attend.
While Trump enjoys a strong following in the Hawkeye State, some party members remain skeptical about his ability to secure victory in Iowa. Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH) highlighted Iowa as one of the two states where Trump faces challenges, expressing his commitment to prevent Trump from becoming the GOP nominee in an op-ed for the New York Times.
“In Iowa and New Hampshire, the first two states that will vote in the 2024 Republican primaries, Mr. Trump is struggling. In both Iowa and New Hampshire, he is consistently polling in the low 40 percent range. The floor of his support may be high, but his ceiling is low,” Sununu wrote.
