Joey M. Broom, 58, of Altoona, Alabama, was fatally injured upon impact, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The collision threw two more men overboard: John K. Clark, 44, of Cullman, Alabama, and Jeffrey C. Little, 62, of Brandon, Mississippi, who drowned.

“This is a heartbreaking moment for our entire organization,” MLF Executive Vice President and General Manager Kathy Fennel said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by this tragedy.”

The crash involved Major League Fishing angler Flint Davis of Leesburg, Georgia, who was competing at the Tackle Warehouse Invitationals. It remains to be seen how Davis was involved.

Davis has competed in over 60 events, placing in the top 10 on 10 occasions. In his career, Major League Fishing has awarded him $127,690 since 2020. In March, at Davis’s last event, the Toyota Series, he took seventh.

Lewis Smith Lake is a 21,200-acre lake with largemouth, striped, and spotted bass. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources assesses the quality of fishing based on bass club tournament results, such as this event that began Tuesday.
