Maine woman admits guilt in fentanyl death of 14-month-old son.
A Maine Woman Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter After Her Son’s Fatal Overdose
AUGUSTA, Maine—In a tragic turn of events, a 22-year-old woman named Ashley Malloy has pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the fatal overdose of her 14-month-old son, Karson. This heartbreaking incident led law enforcement officials to uncover a staggering $700,000 worth of fentanyl and other drugs.
It all began when Ms. Malloy dialed 911 in a desperate attempt to save her son’s life. Sadly, Karson passed away in the hospital, prompting investigators to visit her home. Upon entering the bedroom where Karson had been sleeping, they made a chilling discovery—a blanket and sheet covered in white powder. An autopsy later confirmed that the toddler had succumbed to complications from exposure to the potent opioid fentanyl.
On Wednesday, Ms. Malloy pleaded guilty not only to manslaughter but also to drug charges. Her sentencing will take place at a later date.
According to her attorney, Ms. Malloy was unaware of the risks posed to her son, which he argues amounts to criminal negligence. The attorney further claims that while others were involved in drug trafficking, Ms. Malloy was merely an accomplice and not an active participant.
During a search of her apartment, state police detectives made a shocking discovery. They found nearly 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms) of fentanyl, over 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) of methamphetamine, more than a pound (454 grams) of crack cocaine, and over $2,000 in cash.
