Liberal talk show host Bill Maher condemned cancel culture once again as he took aim at the Olympics. During his show on Friday night, Maher criticized the dismissal of the opening ceremonies director over a decades old Holocaust joke in a comedy routine and the resignation of the ceremonies musical director after he admitted to being a bully as a child.

Maher also took aim at the idea of cultural appropriation by asserting it was absurd to believe that it has been arbitrarily oppressive for people from one culture to practice the traditions of another. He compared rampant cancel culture to a purge that would be seen in Stalin’s USSR.

“This is called a purge. It’s a mentality that belongs in Stalin’s Russia,” he expressed. “How bad does this atmosphere we are living in have to get before the people say cancel culture is overblown, admit that is in fact an insanity that is swallowing up the world?”

In further blasting cultural appropriation, Maher slammed the notion that only the first group of people to do something should be allowed to do it.
