According to underwater expert and engineer Jose Luis Martin, the passengers aboard the ill-fated Titan submersible had a brief window of time to comprehend the unfolding disaster before the unimaginable occurred.

Martin vividly compared the scene to a scene straight out of a horror movie, suggesting that an electrical malfunction may have caused the craft to nosedive, hurtling its occupants into complete darkness towards the ocean floor. The New York Post reported that during this terrifying descent, the passengers would have experienced free fall for approximately 48-71 seconds before the submersible succumbed to the immense pressure.

Electrical Fault Leads to Catastrophic Consequences

“During the controlled immersion of the Titan, there must have been an electrical fault, which left the craft without thrust,” Martin revealed in an interview with Spanish news outlet NIUS. “Without thrust, the weight of the passengers and the pilot (about 400 kilograms), which was focused on the front end close to the view port, would have disrupted the Titan’s longitudinal stability.”

“At this point, the submersible begins to fall headlong towards the seafloor, and with control and safety functions damaged, it can no longer be maneuvered,” Martin continued, noting that this would have also prevented Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush from deploying counterweights and attempting an emergency ascent.

Martin argued that once the submersible lost its balance, there was nothing anyone onboard could do to rectify the situation.

“The Titan changes position and falls like an arrow vertically because the 400 kilos (880 pounds) of passengers that were at the porthole unbalance the submersible. Everyone rushes and crowds on top of each other. Imagine the horror, the fear, and the agony,” he said. “It had to be like a horror movie.”

According to Martin, the passengers likely had a chilling realization of their impending doom during this brief period of time, lasting approximately 48-71 seconds. He emphasized that the entire sequence of events unfolded in complete darkness, making it even more difficult to comprehend the terror they experienced.
