Colorado Governor defends boy removed from class over Gadsden Flag, calls it an iconic American flag.
Colorado Governor Defends Student’s Right to Wear Gadsden Flag
Colorado Democrat Governor Jared Polis, known for his support of abortion and transgenderism, recently came to the defense of a Colorado middle-schooler who was reprimanded for wearing a patch of the Gadsden flag on his backpack.
Jaiden Rodriguez, a 12-year-old student at The Vanguard School, was pulled out of class and told to remove the iconic flag patch because it was believed to have “origins with slavery” and the “slave trade.”
However, Governor Polis appeared on CNN to express his support for the Gadsden flag and the student’s right to wear it.
“The ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ flag, the Gadsden flag, is truly an iconic American symbol. It has been flown over our military units and adopted by various groups, including the Tea Party,” Polis stated. “Just like a kid could wear an ‘I love the Tea Party’ pin, we should allow students to express their political beliefs freely in school.”
During the interview, CNN host Abby Phillip suggested that the flag’s association with slavery was due to its connection with the right, the Tea Party, and possibly the Republican Party.
Polis responded by emphasizing the importance of understanding the history and pride associated with the Gadsden flag. He explained, “The rattlesnake, as Ben Franklin said, ‘They never attack first, but they never back down once they’re in a fight.’ Many Americans identify with that spirit.”
Furthermore, Polis argued that if society wants to advocate for inclusivity and acceptance, schools should not only allow rainbow flags to celebrate Pride but also respect free speech, even when it differs from their own beliefs.
This incident has sparked a national conversation about the importance of protecting free speech in schools and encouraging open dialogue.
