Chicago’s large teen gatherings are becoming violent, upsetting the mayor who disagrees with the term ‘mob’ being used.
Large Groups of Teenagers Cause Chaos in Chicago Streets
Over the summer, the streets of Chicago have witnessed large gatherings of teenagers, known as “teen takeovers,” which often escalate into violent incidents. However, Mayor Brandon Johnson seems more concerned about the terminology used to describe these groups.
Mayor Johnson, who took office earlier this year, has been touting his “unique approach” to engaging with Chicago’s youth amidst the wave of issues caused by these teenage crowds. Following another “teen takeover” last weekend, where 40 youths were arrested for fighting and looting a convenience store, Mayor Johnson defended the arrests and praised the police officers’ “sensitivity and patience” in handling the situation.
According to Mayor Johnson, the police made efforts to engage with the young people and community partners, providing ample warning. He emphasized that his administration is different, aiming to treat people with dignity and care.
However, Mayor Johnson expressed dissatisfaction with the term “mob” being used to describe the rowdy teenagers.
He stated, ”That’s not appropriate. We’re not talking about mob actions. We have to be careful when we use language to describe certain behavior. There’s a history in this city, and, I mean, to refer to children as like baby Al Capones is not appropriate.”
Teen Takeovers and the Impact on Chicago
These gatherings of teenagers have occurred on numerous occasions throughout the city, with incidents of looting stores and vandalizing parked vehicles. The organization of these events primarily takes place through social media.
In June, hundreds of teens brought chaos to the Lakeview neighborhood, shutting down a main street for six hours. Despite residents’ calls to 911, the overwhelmed police force struggled to respond effectively.
Grace Rohen, a resident of Lakeview, described the situation as terrifying, mentioning that gunshots were even heard during the teen takeover. She expressed concern about the drastic changes she has witnessed in her neighborhood over the past few years.
