Kevin McCarthy denies plotting with Trump for potential third indictment.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Denies ”Strategy Session” with Trump
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) vehemently denied rumors of a secret ”strategy session“ with former President Donald Trump regarding his potential third indictment. McCarthy, speaking with reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, couldn’t help but laugh at the suggestion.
“No, no, there was no strategy session about a possible indictment,” McCarthy chuckled. “I believe those strategy sessions take place in the Democrats’ Department of Justice, where they relentlessly target anyone who opposes the president. It seems that the higher you climb in the polls, the greater the likelihood of facing indictment.”
While McCarthy dismissed the notion of discussing the impending indictment, he did admit to having daily phone conversations with Trump. However, the content of these conversations apparently did not revolve around the legal troubles.
Contrary to earlier reports, McCarthy’s statement contradicts claims that he and Trump had a phone call on Tuesday to strategize their response to the Department of Justice’s investigation into the events of January 6. House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) was also rumored to have participated in these discussions.
Trump Faces Potential Third Indictment
This week, Trump revealed that he had been informed by special counsel Jack Smith that he is the target of an investigation into the January 6 riot and alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. It is widely anticipated that Trump will face a third indictment as a result of this investigation.
Many of Trump’s allies in the House, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), have strongly criticized the ongoing investigation. Gaetz wasted no time in announcing his intention to introduce legislation aimed at defunding Smith’s investigation entirely.
