Rep. Katie Porter Raises $3.2 Million for Senate Campaign
Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), a progressive member representing a district largely held by Republicans, has announced an impressive fundraising haul of $3.2 million for the second quarter of 2023 for her 2024 Senate campaign.
The congresswoman revealed that she received a staggering 110,000 donations from all 58 counties in California, showcasing widespread support for her candidacy. This follows her successful first quarter, where she raised $4.5 million from over 80,000 unique donors.
Porter’s Decision to Run for Senate
In January, Porter, a former law professor at the University of California, Irvine, made the bold decision not to seek reelection in California’s 47th Congressional District. Instead, she joined the competitive Democratic primary race to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). Recent polling shows Porter in a close race with Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), while Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) trails behind in the polls.
Schiff, who recently faced censure by the Republican-led House, had an impressive fundraising quarter, raising a record-breaking $8.1 million for his campaign over the past three months. On the other hand, Lee collected the lowest amount, with around $1.3 million raised.
Porter’s Rise to Prominence
Porter gained national attention when she successfully flipped a Republican stronghold in Orange County during her first run for office in 2018. Defeating GOP Rep. Mimi Walters in the 45th District, she then went on to defeat Republican Scott Baugh in the newly redrawn 47th District.
As a member of the Progressive Caucus, Porter has distinguished herself by refusing to accept campaign donations from lobbyists or corporate PACs, setting herself apart from other progressive candidates.
