Just 18% of Voters Want Biden to Run for President in 2024

A stunning 18% of voters want President Joe Biden to pursue reelection in 2024, marking the lowest figure to date as his approval rating continues to plunge, according to a new poll.

Roughly 64% of recipients surveyed said Biden should step aside in 2024, and, now, even a plurality of Democrats, 41%, say that the president should hand the baton off to someone new, eclipsing the 35% of Democrats who would like him to run again, a Yahoo News/YouGov poll found.

SLIDIN’ BIDEN: APPROVAL FALLS BELOW 30%

The poll surveyed 1,672 adults between July 8-11 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. The figure represents a 7-point decline among voters and an 8-point dip among Democrats since May, according to the outlet. The finding follows a recent Morning Consult and Politico poll released Tuesday that found only 29% of over 2,000 respondents wanted Biden to pursue reelection.

Despite the Democratic Party soul-searching over whether Biden should once again be the party’s standard-bearer in 2024, the White House has insisted he plans to run for reelection. The last sitting president to decline a reelection bid was President Lyndon Johnson in 1968.

“The president, as you know, has been asked that question many times, and he has answered it,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters in June. “His answer has been pretty simple, which is ‘Yes, he’s running for reelection.'”

Meanwhile, a growing slew of big-name Democrats, such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, appears to be taking steps to mount a bid for the presidency in 2024. Biden’s prospects in 2024 have been frustrated by myriad crises, such as stubborn gas prices, unbridled inflation, soaring crime, and more, dogging his presidency ahead of the midterm elections.

Some Democrats, such as former President Barack Obama’s chief political strategist David Axelrod, have voiced concerns about Biden’s age. At 79, he is the oldest person to run the country and would be 82 years old heading into a hypothetical second inauguration.

Biden’s current average approval is 38.5%, per the Real Clear Politics polling aggregate.

On the upside for Biden, voters surveyed in the Yahoo News/YouGov poll do not appear to have coalesced around an alternative. When asked who they would like to see as the Democratic nominee in 2024, roughly 27% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents pointed to Biden, just under 19% said Vice President Kamala Harris, and 20% wanted someone else, with 30% not sure, according to the poll.

The White House has shrugged off concerns about lackluster polling, stressing that polls are “going to go up and they’re going to go down.” Biden has also contradicted the poll numbers and claimed that Democrats “want me to run” in 2024.

On the other side of the aisle, polls have also found a plurality of voters do not want former President Donald Trump to seek another shot at the presidency. Just 35% of 2,000 respondents in the recent Morning Consult and Politico poll wanted him to run. About 61% said he should not run again. The poll was conducted between July 8-10 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
